Keeping History Alive: About Patti Miller

http://www.keepinghistoryalive.com/about.html

Patti Miller grew up in an all white small rural community in Iowa, in the heart of the Midwest. Her hero was Abraham Lincoln and her assumption, from her reading, was that the slaves were freed and that all men and women, black and white, lived together in harmony in her country. Patti and her family - 1948. Patti is now devoting her time to Keeping History Alive by sharing her story through public lectures, making a documentary and writing a book. Patti is eager to connect with the young people of ...

Solo Bus Ride to Mississippi". Living with 'Dying' ". The majority of my time in Mississippi for Freedom Summer was spent working in the Community Center in Meridian with anywhere from 30- 40 children. We read books, did arts and crafts projects, listened to the record player that had been donated to the Center and sometimes even went on “field trips”. 8220;What are you eating? 8220;Dirt” came the reply. Not believing my ears, I repeated “What? 8220;Dirt,” came the answer again. 8220;Can you show me?

Giving Back the Big Half: August 2012

http://givingbackthebighalf.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

Giving Back the Big Half. Reflections of a college student devoted to service. Tuesday, August 21, 2012. What Else Can You Do About It Except Laugh? There was only one problem, when I turned the handle of the faucet, no water came out. Thinking I must be imagining things I tried turning the other handle of the faucet, still no water came rushing out, not even a trickle. Unwilling to accept this, I went down the line of sinks, turning the handle of each one. Water did not present itself. But, instead, I s...

Giving Back the Big Half: A Grave in Red Dirt

http://givingbackthebighalf.blogspot.com/2013/08/a-grave-in-red-dirt.html

Giving Back the Big Half. Reflections of a college student devoted to service. Sunday, August 25, 2013. A Grave in Red Dirt. Thirteen years of dance training didn't seem to have any effect on my ability to travel through the wilderness of Africa, and Vile found my lack of agility to be of great amusement. She laughed hysterically as I tripped over a rock and skated down the dirt as if it were ice, landing in a small ditch. You Americans don't even know how to walk! Vile, what is. I stood motionless to st...

http://givingbackthebighalf.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Giving Back the Big Half. Reflections of a college student devoted to service. Saturday, October 13, 2012. Not a day goes by where I don’t think about my brothers and sisters across the world. Sandile, Kholiwe, Danele, Colile, Takhona, Gizy, Tlamiso, Dumsile and dozens of other names and faces run through my head as I go about my daily activities. It’s been almost three months since I left for Swaziland and I’m still processing. I’m still on that struggle bus. My power, my strength, was just an illusion.

Giving Back the Big Half. Reflections of a college student devoted to service. Saturday, January 11, 2014. I Go to Swaziland to Count Rocks. Whenever people find out I’ve been to Swaziland, Africa, people are very excited to talk to me about it. Their eyes light up and they ask animatedly,. 8220;So, what was the highlight of your trip? 8220;The highlight of my trip was sitting in the dirt and counting pebbles with a very sweet little girl.”. What a waste of money.”. If counting rocks with a 5 year old in...

Return to Freedom Summer: Passing the Torch

http://www.returntofreedomsummer.com/site/foundation.php

Iowans Return to Freedom Summer. KEEPING HISTORY ALIVE FOUNDATION. In a recent article in the New York Times, a report by the Southern Poverty Law Center pointed out that across the country, state educational standards virtually ignore our Civil Rights history. One of missions of KHAF is to support young people, our leaders of tomorrow, to learn from our Civil Rights history and to discover their own ways to lead our country into a more enlightened future. The documentary Return to Freedom Summer. In the...

Giving Back the Big Half. Reflections of a college student devoted to service. Friday, June 21, 2013. 8220;We are just so far from having it all together aren’t we? I nod and grunt a wordless agreement. Sierra pauses thoughtfully, then lifts her head and looks at me straight on. 8220;But isn’t it great how God can use us anyway? 8221; I knew I wanted to go back to sing and pray and laugh and cry and love the people who I knew for such a short time yet so easily came to feel like family. And then all at o...

Giving Back the Big Half: December 2012

http://givingbackthebighalf.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html

Giving Back the Big Half. Reflections of a college student devoted to service. Friday, December 7, 2012. Let me take you back to a day about fourteen years ago. I'm standing on the blacktop basketball court in front of my elementary school's playground staring at the sky. The clouds above me are a murky grey, ominously promising rainfall. I wonder what the clouds must feel like. Are they soft like my stuffed animals? A dozen other six year olds are scrambling around me, lining up to go inside after recess.

Giving Back the Big Half. Reflections of a college student devoted to service. Wednesday, May 23, 2012. Grieving to Gratitude: How Thankfulness Changed My Life. Smiling and am most definitely not in some kind of eternally good mood. I get angry, sad, and feel pain far more often than most people seem to realize. I have my bad days just like everyone else. I’m human, not a Barbie doll with a smile plastered on its face. Then, one day, about three weeks before I started college, I decided I’d write i...

Keeping His Commandments

Monday, February 13, 2012. Bad stuff to avoid. Stop living in it. You will never be able to be a part of the Kingdom of God as long as you live in adultery. (Galatians 5:19). To be married to the divorced is adultery. It will drag your soul to hell unless you separate from your partner in adultery and start living in purity. If you are living in marriage with someone who was once in a right marriage as described above but is now divorced and married to you, know this; you are living in adultery. From the...

Chris' Spontaneous Cancer

Sunday, December 16, 2007. I have had two doctor visits since my last treatment. The first was with my radiation doctor. She looked down my throat and said that it looks like the tumor is totally gone and no signs of cancer at this stage and everything is healing up quite well, yet is still very swollen. Lots of phlem, but that is to be expected. All in all a very good report! Merry Christmas to everyone and thanks for your prayers and support. Sunday, November 11, 2007. Superman is Human After All!

A Keeper at Home. My life as a stay-at-home, Christian, homeschooling Mom. Meals on a Budget. April 21, 2011. Times are starting to get a little tough. Gas prices are on the rise again – right near my house in Colorado it is $3.55/gallon. When gas goes up, so does everything else that depends on transportation. So we are starting to feel the pain at the grocery store checkout. Here are a few meals that are easy, cheap, and tasty! 8211; definitely one of my favorites! 8211; very cheap and good for you!
