Frozen Chosen: January 2011
http://polarjew.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Two Years in Barrow, Alaska. Thursday, January 13, 2011. One of the traditional Thanksgiving activities in Barrow is attending The Feast at the Presbyterian Church. It's an informal meal, indoor-picnic style, that is an opportunity to enjoy traditional foods, not the least of which is maktak (whale blubber and skin) and whale meat. The judge and his wife, both very active church members, kindly invited me to join them. The church was very full. First, each food to be served was blessed by the congregation.

Frozen Chosen: September 2010

Two Years in Barrow, Alaska. Tuesday, September 21, 2010. Yesterday was one of those days. I had ordered some film from Amazon (a story for another time), and I had a slip for that, but there was also a mystery second package slip! What could it be? I got in line at the counter to find out. It was a medium sized box, not too heavy, sent priority mail from Burlington, Mass. I hustled home and tore into my stuff. PastaBatman investigates the mystery parcel. Ooh, a clue! What does it say, PB? I wasn't able ...

http://polarjew.blogspot.com/2012/03/first-trip-out-of-barrow.html
Two Years in Barrow, Alaska. First trip out of Barrow. Friday, March 16, 2012. Many people are surprised to learn that up until nine months after moving to Alaska, Barrow was the only part of it I had seen (airports not included), but the fact is that until January of 2011 I didn't even leave Barrow! First I went to Chicago to see Bob, Janine, and most importantly, Parvis. Look! However, we had dinner at Longman and Eagle. It's tough to disagree. On the way to Columbus, Mom and I stopped in Cleveland to ...

Two Years in Barrow, Alaska. Tuesday, October 26, 2010. And now for a long overdue post about whaling! Most residents up here are Inupiaq and are exempt from international bans on whaling. International-, national-, and state-level agencies set quotas for sustenance whaling for the native people of Barrow. For example, the Alaska Whaling Commission. This pretty much sums it up.
