NEW VIOLIN FAMILY INSTRUMENTS. I make violins, violas, and cellos by hand using the best possible materials. I enjoy designing instruments to have particular playing characteristics. As a player myself, my priorities for a new instrument are response and a range of color. I also go to great lengths to make the instruments as easy and comfortable to play as possible. Besides the one above, by Chris Navin, these are all taken by me during a normal work day. These are some photos of a cello being made. It’s a copy, more or less, of a Joseph Guarnerius Filius Andrae made in 1692. It has a Poplar back, and the head is of Ash. The only one I’ve ever seen. It was fun to carve, and it’s fun to see people’s reaction when they see it. Here is the head being sawn out in the first stage of carving. On the bench is the template for the sides of the pegbox.
