The Monigwe: December 2013
http://monicasislak.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Sunday, December 22, 2013. Vacation Part 1: KZN. I was SO excited to leave on Tuesday for the first of my two vacations – it was like Christmas came early! Don’t get me wrong, it was nice to have some down time in the village and hang out a bit more with my family, but mostly I was dodging raindrops, so I was looking forward to traveling to an area with better weather. I was able to make the trip from my village to St Lucia in record time! Blue-cheeked Bee-eater in St Lucia. Birding in St Lucia. Of the g...

The Monigwe: American Visitors
http://monicasislak.blogspot.com/2014/03/american-visitors.html
Sunday, March 30, 2014. Last Saturday morning, I made my way to town for a special event – to meet up with a former colleague from Princeton High School, Lisa and her husband, Larry who were on vacation in South Africa. It was truly a special treat. I met them in my shopping town, hopped in their rental car, and then we were off for a few days of exploring South Africa. The Bird and Butterfly Bed and Breakfast. Lisa and Larry at the Raphia Palms. Our last morning in Mtunzini. Last Trip to Pretoria.

The Monigwe: Electricity March
http://monicasislak.blogspot.com/2014/03/electricity-march.html
Sunday, March 16, 2014. An old picture of my family's house with their electricity. Account number. Today, it is no longer visible. Homework by paraffin light. The only way to see. A small paraffin stove is used to heat up. An iron for ironing clothes and blankets. A solar panel on the roof charges and old car battery. Which is converted to electricity for charging cell phones. Sadly, I have a feeling my 5 year old host sister is going to be doing her secondary school homework by candlelight.

Monday, June 17, 2013. Reflections on Term 2. The term official ends this coming Friday, June 20, but as I am gone from site and at a training this week, for me, the term actually ended last Friday, June 13. This means the school year is half over! Well, he WON! I would say that over the years I have had some spectacular birthdays, and this ranks right up there with the best of them. 1) No Scissors Allowed: I was really trying to give grade 5 an authentic learning experience when we studied 3-D objects t...

The Monigwe: May 2013
http://monicasislak.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, May 28, 2013. School Fund Raising for Library Books. Inspired by my family’s entrepreneurship, and in need of more materials for the library, I have taken up the cause of raising R2000 to help my school acquire approximately 750 more books. It is more or less the same as trying to raise $2000 because all the fundraisers are designed to earn a rand or two per item, just like an American school fundraiser would only be earning a dollar or two per item. The School Store. That's right,. Actually, th...

The Monigwe: August 2013
http://monicasislak.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
Sunday, August 25, 2013. I have always been one to enjoy a good bonfire or campfire or fire in the fireplace. I guess I like fire. It has come in handy here on more than a few occasions. Turns out that Zulus also like fire. They use it for disposing of trash, cooking in large pots for village functions, and what I learned most recently, spring cleaning of the yard. The brush in front of Ncepheni Mountain. During its yearly controlled burn. My host sister Niki makes sure that the small flames. Other thing...
