The idea came to me as I was entering a seafood restaurant in Newport, Rhode Island one evening. Across the street sat a very small cottage-like house, and the sun was setting behind it. I used a photo and my memory as source materials, but I severely simplified the composition elements to focus on two structures, rather than the many that stand along the shore. My paintings are firmly rooted in the American realist tradition. Form and light play key roles in my work. The transient nature of light, particularly at sundown, intrigues me.
