With waterfalls, cascades and a canyon, the Tahmoor Gorge and Mermaid Pool area provides a beautiful half day walk near Picton. The stunning Mermaid Pool on the Bargo River, in rain. It's always a joy when I discover a new walk, particularly one relatively close to home. This is a fabulous 10km loop. Park near the Rockford Road bridge that goes over the Bargo River at Tahmoor. (Turn left into Charles Point R...

Season of snakes and small birds, spring in the NSW bush is rarely as spectacular as it can be in other parts of the world, but in some areas the bush tracks are festooned with flowers, and the amiable weather can suit short strolls or longer treks. It's a great time to be in the outdoors. Here are five of my top recommendations for spring walking in this diverse state. Waratahs aplenty near Pulpit Rock, Blue Mountains.

Scenic Rim Trail, southern Queensland. Looking for something more than a day walk, but not sure you want the hassles of carrying a large pack and tent? Want to finish a day's walk with a hot shower, comfy bed and a glass of wine, not a packet of two-minute noodles and a thin mattress on the ground? These large, safari-te...

kensbigbackyard: Tassie's tourism secret
http://kensbigbackyard.blogspot.com/2015/06/tassies-tourism-secret.html
Tuesday, 16 June 2015. What is the problem that Tasmanian Tourism authorities talk about in hushed tones and candid off-the-record statements? The summit of Mt Wellington, Tas. Too boring for some? On a recent visit to Hobart I overheard a comment that I've heard several times before from people in the Tasmanian tourism industry. There's nothing to do in Hobart". However, for those who are looking for "something to do" in Hobart though, I thought I'd give a few ideas, based on this latest and other trips.

Sunday, 26 October 2014. How to cook kangaroo tail. How to cook kangaroo tail. This will probably be my shortest post ever, as it's pretty simple. First, take your tail (defrosted) and burn the hair off. This involves either chucking it on a fire for a minute or two, or somehow holding it over a fire and singeing it until black all over. Then put it on the coals of the fire. Heap other coals over it. Then, let it cool a little (that fat will be quite hot) before attempting to wrestle with your meal.

Sunday, 3 May 2015. Tops" destination for the outdoor family. Tops destination for the outdoor family. Canoeing on the Barrington River, near Gloucester, NSW. You'd think a beautiful World Heritage Area only a couple of hours drive out of Sydney would be hugely popular. But Barrington Tops and the area around Gloucester, NSW, is one of our state's forgotten treasures. For outdoor-loving families, it's a no-brainer. Get up there - any season! The website is a little deceptive, and there isn't really much ...
