Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park birds

Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park birds. Monday, 17 August 2015. There was just one Mistle Thrush in the rowan trees on Buck Hill. It seems that yesterday's large flock was just passing over the park on its way to somewhere else. The family of Magpies on Buck Hill were bouncing around in the long grass looking for insects. The young stay with their parents until the following year, when the next brood arrives. A Speckled Wood butterfly was drinking juice from a blackberry. Sunday, 16 August 2015. One of t...

Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park birds. Wednesday, 12 August 2015. One of the young Grey Wagtails flew on to the terrace of the Dell restaurant. It is just beginning to develop the black bib of an adult. There were four Mistle Thrushes on Buck Hill, hunting insects along the edges of the patches of long grass. A Wood Pigeon was feeding its young in a tree near the bridge. The male Little Owl was in the maple tree near the leaf yard, preening and stretching. 13 August 2015 at 00:43. Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park birds. Wednesday, 5 August 2015. The Great Crested Grebe family on the Long Water had left their nest and were in a willow tree opposite Peter Pan. There are three chicks. Here one of them gets fed. Two of the grebe chicks on the Serpentine were wrestling while their father looked on indulgently. Here is a young Blackbird in the Flower Walk. They are shapeless and awkward until they grow up into elegant adults. 6 August 2015 at 06:02. 6 August 2015 at 12:11. Thanks. T...

http://www.kensingtongardensandhydeparkbirds.blogspot.com/2015/08/there-are-now-two-chicks-in-great.html

Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park birds. Sunday, 9 August 2015. There are now two chicks in the Great Crested Grebes' nest under the bridge. This brings the total number of chicks on both lakes to eight, better than previous years. There is no shortage of fish to feed them. Here one of the grebes from the island, having just fed the two chicks in the picture, dodges round them to feed the third. And yes, the chick did manage to swallow this medium-sized perch, with some effort. Just across the path from h...

http://www.kensingtongardensandhydeparkbirds.blogspot.com/2015/08/this-is-first-sight-of-great-crested.html

Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park birds. Monday, 3 August 2015. This is the first sight of a Great Crested Grebe chick in the nest in the reeds on the Long Water. This nest can only be seen from the opposite side of the lake, looking over the fallen horse chestnut tree, and even with binoculars it's hard to see what's going on. The grebe family on the Serpentine were in their usual place, close in to the east end of the island. The male Little Owl was quite hard to find today, hidden deep in the leaves of...

http://www.kensingtongardensandhydeparkbirds.blogspot.com/2015/08/a-rainy-day-makes-no-difference-to.html

Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park birds. Thursday, 13 August 2015. A rainy day makes no difference to a Pochard. And Blackbirds are delighted, because the rain brings up worms. A Grey Heron was looking a bit soggy on the edge of the Serpentine. One of the owlets was in the nest tree, sheltering under the thick canopy of chestnut leaves. The two Mute Swan cygnets on the Serpentine are growing up into graceful teenagers. The Great Crested Grebe family halfway up the Long Water were again on the near side, i...

Bangor West Patchwork Challenge. Monday, 19 December 2016. This is the last photo of him at the CS Lewis Square in East Belfast looking at the stone table sculpture. We are left with pictures and memories which will help to ease the hurt, as will nature and the great outdoors, plus, " A wee Maudes and I could force down a latte! I got back to birding at WOW on Thursday and we had over 30 species including a good array of waders and ducks. We also had a grey heron. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Bangor West Patchwork Challenge: February 2016

Bangor West Patchwork Challenge. Monday, 29 February 2016. Great to be back in the North East for another yomp round some excellent bird spots. We started with a visit to Newbiggin for a walk with the family and were rewarded with Mediterranean g. Ull and an Oystercatcher. With a sense of dignity as it posed on a tombstone in the church. All the following photos were taken by my friend and birding mate David who was experimenting with his new camera - a Christmas present from his wife. We moved to the Ca...

Bangor West Patchwork Challenge: 2017 New year new lists

http://bangorwestndcp.blogspot.com/2017/01/2017-new-year-new-lists.html

Bangor West Patchwork Challenge. Monday, 2 January 2017. 2017 New year new lists. The year has got off to a slow start as I did not set out on New Years Day to do a bird list. I spent January 1 in and around the garden and Bangor West and today was spent on a drive to Tollymore Forest Park and a walk. Nevertheless some good birds were spotted. The garden produced all that I expected including long-tailed tit and blackcap. West Bangor patch list: 19. 4 January 2017 at 00:05. North Down Coastal Path. 2016 ...

A little wine for remembrance . . . a little water for the dust. Two documents for Cyriaco of Ancona, one new, one ignored, that contribute to his portrait. He was 63 and had been going to Venice since he was 10. This document is available on-line at. ASV Senato Privilegi 1425-October 1560. Francesco Filelfo to Cyriaco, greetings,. Bangor West Patchwork Challenge: November 2016

Bangor West Patchwork Challenge. Thursday, 24 November 2016. With a title like that I should get lots of hits from people looking for a cartoon character, but NO, this is WOW frozen for the first time since I started volunteering there in June 2015. This meant that birds were at a premium. We struggled to reach 20 species and apart from 180 curlew. And about 25 lapwing. There were no waders. The only duck was teal. Teal flock on the only bit of open water. The goldfinch "charm" totalled 30. 2016 list is ...

Bangor West Patchwork Challenge. Sunday, 23 October 2016. The magic of Islay. Saturday saw me on Islay for the second time. Two years ago I visited in September and went to the Oa reserve. This time the plan was to go to Lough Gruinart to see the geese flock. The sight and sound of 30000 barnacle geese. Then a bus up to Loch Gruinart RSPB reserve which takes about 25 minutes. There are barnacle geese. Missed the other 37980. There's some of them. A few more and their Canadian friends. Clearly these are d...
