Random bits of kiwispeak. March 13, 2011 / yeahnahsweetas. NZE meets Te Reo Maori. In last week’s post I said that a notable feature of New Zealand English is the borrowed words of Maori origin found in its lexicon. Today I will expand on this further. Specific examples of loanwords that entered NZE in this period are. Moa, kiwi, weka, pukeko, rimu, kauri, totara, Kaitaia, Otaki, haka, wahine. Most of the words we (whether intentionally or not) pronounce badly are from this wave, particularly place names.

NZ tennis fan at large. February 27, 2011. February 27, 2011. I was a recent visitor to the Middle East where I visited Jordan, Oman and the UAE. I was surprised when the week after I visited several people were killed in protests in Jordan. The Jordanian people were really friendly and I thoroughly enjoyed my visit there.
