澎湖的野鳥，最可愛的莫過於水塘上的小鷿鷈。輕巧圓滾的體型、迅速敏捷的潛水動作，讓注目的眼神不得不多停留在牠身上。小鷿鷈的體型不大，體長約26公分，因為體型小，又常在水面上漂游，也常被誤說是小水鴨，其實兩者差別很大，小水鴨的體長就有38公分，就比小鷿鷈多長了半個身體，小鷿鷈真的比小水鴨嬌小很多。 小鷿鷈的體型肥胖渾圓，水面上看到的體色大致是黑褐色和栗紅色。頭頂、後頸至背部羽色是黑褐色，臉頰以下到頸側是栗紅色，極為醒目。至於小鷿鷈的腹部是白色，但是小鷿鷈平常都是漂浮在水面上，腹部都在水面下不容易看到，唯有在繁殖期間，站立在巢位上時，才可以看到潔白的腹羽。小鷿鷈另一可愛之處是牠的眼睛，金黃的眼珠子，圓圓滾滾，中間再一點黑色的瞳孔，宛如一顆鈕扣。嘴巴黑色、細而尖，但是嘴巴可以張很大，大到可以容得下一條中型的魚。 春、夏季是小鷿鷈主要的繁殖季，公母鳥找到伴侶後便開始共同建構巢位。開始會先找有固定的水草作為起家的支柱，再慢慢地到處叼回枯草枯葉，堆疊出一個淺漥盤狀的巢位，漂浮在水面上。近年來在戶外的觀察，發...親鳥護蛋過程是呵護備至，常會用嘴翻動蛋，維持整顆蛋的正常溫度；氣...羽鮮豔。 夏羽時...
