TEFL Con Ticos

Friday, October 5, 2012. Two Years Down, Two Months to Go. It’s crazy to think that two years ago today, Kevin and I arrived in Costa Rica. It’s even crazier to think that we only have two more months to go. Our Peace Corps service officially ends Dec. 4, a day that I imagine will be full of mixed emotions — thrilled to be going home to see family, celebrate Christmas and enjoy the beautiful state of Alaska, but sad to leave the pura vida. TEFL Con Ticos: Trailblazers

http://www.kevinandmegon.blogspot.com/2012/04/trailblazers.html

Tuesday, April 3, 2012. A person who makes a new track through wild country. A pioneer; an innovator. As we watched the white bus marked TURISMO roll away down our dusty dirt road last Monday morning, we couldn’t help but think how odd the word seemed. Technically the 12 boys and their three teachers from North Carolina, who had just spent four days visiting our community, were tourists. But could tourists make such a profound impact on so many people? Finally, our local marimba. April 22, 2012 at 7:37 PM.

TEFL Con Ticos: La Zona Sur

http://www.kevinandmegon.blogspot.com/2012/06/la-zona-sur.html

Wednesday, June 20, 2012. One of the places on our Costa Rican must-see list has been la Zona Sur, the southern region of Costa Rica. Despite all the traveling we did during December and January when Megon’s family came to visit, it’s the one region we had yet to explore. Very aggressive). An article in La Nación, Costa Rica’s national newspaper, said it measured eight meters deep. About two kilometers down the road he found an outcropping on the opposite shoulder that bowed out like a rainbow. At th...

Monday, September 24, 2012. TICO 21 TEFL Legacy. When asked what our legacy would be here in Costa Rica, TICO 21 TEFL volunteers put together this funny description of our service during our recent Close of Service conference in San José. The video - entirely filmed at the Corobici Hotel - is intended to make light of some of the challenges volunteers have faced and to humorously celebrate our successes. Kevin Klott and Megon Coon. TEFL Con Ticos: Kids Don't Like to Read

http://www.kevinandmegon.blogspot.com/2012/07/kids-dont-like-to-read.html

Wednesday, July 18, 2012. Kids Don't Like to Read. We’ve heard it many times since we embarked on our elementary school library project. Kids here just don’t like to read. A library is a nice idea, we were told told, but don’t expect kids to actually enjoy it. Thank goodness we didn’t listen. Next came the first graders. They loved Kevin’s reading of “Is Your Mama a Llama? 8221; she smiled. I think they’re hooked. Kevin Klott and Megon Coon. It looks as if you went with painted rocks, good choice! La Oto...

Sunday, August 4, 2013. A Whole New Adventure: Marching Forward

http://tarahandchris.blogspot.com/2012/04/marching-forward.html

Friday, April 6, 2012. Anyway, March: two years in, two months to go. It's crazy to think that this whole Peace Corps Costa Rica thing started two years ago today. We've come a long way. We've been through a lot and it is kind of hard to believe that we'll be headed home in just a few short months. We'll be sad to see them [ Sarah and Molly. Two years in Costa Rica! My morning was dedicated to washing clothes. And then, since they were setting up the rondel. Tomorrow starts our "getting on the books" pro...

A Whole New Adventure: May [departures and arrivals]

http://tarahandchris.blogspot.com/2012/06/may-departures-and-arrivals.html

Friday, June 1, 2012. May [departures and arrivals]. Orlando called us at 8 to see if we had anything planned for the day. An hour later we were meeting up to head out to the San Juan River for a day of adventure! We did parachute games and jump rope during the first recreo. And played elbow tag during the second one. Chris woke me up this morning and sent me packing to get some medicine. The medical office called in three prescriptions, hopefully I'll stop being sick soon. Prep, aerobics and more packing.

A Whole New Adventure: The End is Near [April]

http://tarahandchris.blogspot.com/2012/05/end-is-near-april.html

Friday, May 4, 2012. The End is Near [April]. April flew. It was a month filled with work, friends and the tedious things that are required in order to leave Peace Corps. We once again have found ourselves questioning where the time went. Then I looked through our journal and saw that we were just using every last minute to its fullest (well, almost every last minute.). If you're curious what we were up to last month, stick around. Here is comes. Don't come to La Colonia). Trees when we heard the aguacero.

A Whole New Adventure: The Big Move

http://tarahandchris.blogspot.com/2012/03/big-move.html

Saturday, March 24, 2012. Our old living quarters (during rainy season). The following August the "move" conversation started again. The landlord was threatening to raise the rent. Once again we heard endless talk of moving to this house or another. This time we decided to be proactive. We talked to a couple of people ourselves, letting then know that our host family may be moving and if they did so, would we be able to rent a cabina. Lots of natural lighting (we have two large windows and two doors that...

A Whole New Adventure: funding frustrations

http://tarahandchris.blogspot.com/2011/10/funding-frustrations.html

Sunday, October 16, 2011. Much like teaching a man to fish rather than just giving him a fish, we saw Peace Corps as a way to provide undeveloped and developing nations with human resources rather than monetary resources. When we swore in as volunteers. Then December arrived, and with it floods. After the first of the year, meetings were held with representatives from the. Ministerio de Educación Pública. Usually the Ministerio de Educación Pública. Well before the flood caused the hurried move to the ne...

Monday, March 5, 2012. February [aaaahhhhh. where has the time gone? Aaaaand. here we go. February in a glance (OK, maybe a little longer than a glance). Even though the fence has been taken down the chickens are still hanging out in the hen yard. Perhaps because Maria and Rafa are still feeding them. A Whole New Adventure: reading list

http://tarahandchris.blogspot.com/2012/07/reading-list.html

Sunday, July 22, 2012. One of the few constants during our Peace Corps service was reading. We were both voracious readers before landing in Costa Rica and that didn't change once we set foot in Ticolandia. We both read a wide variety of books both in English and in Spanish. During the past twenty-seven months we discovered new authors (Vonnegut and Toole) and reread favorites ( The Last Season. Here's a summary of what we read while living in the world of pura vida. Desert Solitaire* - Abbey (C&T).

A Whole New Adventure: From the Colony to the Village

http://tarahandchris.blogspot.com/2012/03/from-colony-to-village.html

Sunday, March 25, 2012. From the Colony to the Village. Yesterday, I finally delivered my service offered in the PCV charity auction. Friday night, I laid all my gear out then went to bed even earlier than normal. I was up before 5:00am, ate a little homemade bread, and was on my way a little after 5:00. The run to. Aldea was beautiful. The dirt road wound through cattle ranches, banana and pineapple plantations, and stands of trees full of tropical birds and howler monkeys. Starting nice and early.

Monday, August 13, 2012. Our little family has grown! On August 1st at 3:18am (I know, what an unearthly hour! We welcomed Callie Dominique. She weighed in at a whopping 5lbs. 10oz. and 18 inches long. Our family has been pretty excited to have her finally here. And Holland is trying to love Callie to death. I am surprised at how each morning she is still amazed to find a baby in our house. Wonder when that one will wear off? Wednesday, June 6, 2012. As of last Monday Kevin now works here.
