THE CAPTIVE ROAD | Kevin Finseth

The new songs represent the sound I have been dreaming about for a while. Acoustic piano, cello, upright bass (in this case I played a bass balalaika), some spare marimba and accordion – and harmony vocals. The pieces are lean and spacious – intimate and spare. In general, these pieces began from the piano. Bass balalaika, marimba and accordion filled out the basic rhythm section – then vocals, then cello. Oddly the drum parts came last. Recorded @ Vancouver Live Sound by Andrew Smith.

5 or 6 Things I Know About Her. This piece was the first collaboration with cellist Peggy Lee and I was instantly struck by how her playing lifted the song to another level. My original intention had been to collaborate with a different instrumentalist on each piece – however, after this experience with Peggy I was suddenly sure I had discovered the sound I wanted to get on this record.
