Scherzi: August 2013
http://kevinjbowman.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
Playful Excursions in the Grand Symphony of Life. By day I'm a propeller-head geek. I design software for electronic components for a major automotive supplier. When I'm not earning a paycheck, I enjoy playing music - primarily jazz and classical but I dabble in other genres as well. I also compose, arrange, and play with electronic gadgets and toys. My other hobbies include photography, colored pencil drawing, genealogy, model railroading, and crosswords. View my complete profile. My Personal Web Site.

Musings of a Jazz Saxophonist. Tuesday, November 02, 2010. DYNAMICS AND LISTENING (WHO HAS THE LEAD? When sight-reading in the context of an ensemble (of any size), the dynamics are just as important as the notes and rhythms. Play at or below the written dynamic level. If you do not have the lead (the melody, or tune), play softer. LEARN LOTS OF TUNES. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, United States. View my complete profile. Musings of a Jazz Saxophonist. Wednesday, February 10, 2010. Close Enough for Jazz. I play in two community jazz bands, each of them composed primarily of non-career musicians (I dislike the term " amateur. Why is it, then, that musicians who are otherwise quite capable and talented fail to perform jazz with the same attention they give to other (legit) music? Let's abolish the aphorism, "close enough for jazz.". Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, United States. Close Enough for Jazz.
Reed Buzz: The Tied Eighth Note & "Getting Off"
http://reedbuzz.blogspot.com/2010/11/tied-eighth-note-getting-off.html
Musings of a Jazz Saxophonist. Friday, November 05, 2010. The Tied Eighth Note and "Getting Off". In jazz, an eighth note tied to the end of a longer note is interpreted differently than it would be in "legit", or classical, playing. This figure is often encountered in ballads but is sometimes seen in straight-ahead charts as well. In jazz, this note sounds for. Two beats: the tied eighth note is an indication to stop the note. Reed Buzz: February 2011
http://reedbuzz.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Musings of a Jazz Saxophonist. Friday, February 04, 2011. All's Well That Ends Well. I don't get it: why do so many "musicians" assume a fermata on a long final note when there is none? Why do they stop counting when they reach that last note? A whole note tied to a dotted half gets 7 beats. No matter where it occurs. But especially at the end of the song when there's not a birdseye in sight. Count, listen, and have some confidence in your own performance. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
