What is an Image? In Lynda Barry’s talk she asks the seemingly simple question, what is an image. Similarly, Barry also mentioned how children don’t plan out their games before they begin. They just start playing and a story unfolds naturally to them. This is an example of a spontaneous and pure image. Anything that can be imagined is an image. You can say that a photograph is a physical manifestation of an image. A photograph captures a moment in time, and allows you to look back at the moment exactly how it looked at the time. Because pictures trigger visual images, they are very strongly connected with memory. Seeing an old photograph can cause a flood of memories and emotions from a different time. I don’t think Egan ever specified his exact age, but Lou is not exactly fresh out of high school. He is old enough to be Jocelyn’s father.
