Links to this post. Friday, July 26, 2013. Skip Counting vs. the Times Tables. Links to this post. Tuesday, July 23, 2013. This summer, I'm determined to teach Younger Daughter the times tables. To that end, I downloaded a bunch of Schoolhouse Rocks multiplication songs. And made a CD to play in the car. In the ...
Coalition for Kid-Friendly Schools: April 2014
http://kidfriendlyschools.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Coalition for Kid-Friendly Schools. Kid-Friendly schools are schools that put kids and their needs first. Sunday, April 20, 2014. I decided on chocolate icing for this year's lamb cake. There's a long tradition of cigarette-smoking lamb cakes, and some controversy over their meaning. My favorite explanation is that smoking is one of those luxuries you might have given up for Lent; once Easter comes, Lent is over, and everybody can light up again, even the lamb! Coalition for Kid-Friendly Schools: Opting Out
http://kidfriendlyschools.blogspot.com/2015/04/opting-out.html
Coalition for Kid-Friendly Schools. Kid-Friendly schools are schools that put kids and their needs first. Tuesday, April 7, 2015. This year, for the first time, we are opting Younger Daughter out of standardized testing. In previous years, she didn't want to be singled out as different from the other kids, so she went ahead and did the tests. This year, there's been enough of a groundswell that she knows other kids who are opting out, so she's ready to join them. May 1, 2015 at 4:32 PM. Deborah L. Ruf.
Coalition for Kid-Friendly Schools: June 2013
http://kidfriendlyschools.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Coalition for Kid-Friendly Schools. Kid-Friendly schools are schools that put kids and their needs first. Friday, June 28, 2013. From a comment by Chris on his blog, A Blog About School. FedUpMom - I hear you. It's easy to imagine some aspects of "student-centered" education (for example, some efforts at "project-based learning") being an utter waste of students' time. In my opinion, it's easy to imagine aspects of old-fashioned ("sage on the stage"? Education being a total waste of time, too. The PREP c...
Coalition for Kid-Friendly Schools: Dickon Among the Lenapes

Coalition for Kid-Friendly Schools. Kid-Friendly schools are schools that put kids and their needs first. Wednesday, July 22, 2015. Dickon Among the Lenapes. As part of my project of re-reading books I liked as a kid, I recently read The Indians of New Jersey: Dickon Among the Lenapes,. Reading this again as an adult, I notice how progressive the tribal customs were. When Dickon kills his first deer, he brings it back in triumph to his household. The tribe is matrilineal; clan membership passes through t...

Parenting is Political: Too Much Homework, Part 3
http://northtomom.blogspot.com/2015/04/too-much-homework-part-3.html
Tuesday, April 28, 2015. Too Much Homework, Part 3. It's "summative" season at my kids' school—the period between March break and final exams when teachers assign labour-intensive final projects that count for a substantial chunk of the final grade. These projects are all due around the same time—because we wouldn't want kids to enjoy the warmer weather too. A perfect time, then, for me to resume the sorry saga of my family's fight against excessive homework. The trustee responded quickly. She seemed...

The following is an edited version of comments I made as a participant on a "Digital Literacy" panel at the recent "Understanding Media Now" conference, hosted by the. Association for Media Literacy. We’ve been encouraged to be provocative here, so to that end,. It seems to me that the urgency surrounding this question is. This metaphor has been rightly criticized for lacking explanatory power and f...
Parenting is Political: Too Much F***ing Homework, Part 2
http://northtomom.blogspot.com/2015/02/the-facts-too-much-fing-homework-part-2.html
Sunday, February 1, 2015. Too Much F* *ing Homework, Part 2. A project for which enough class or library time was allotted, nor was it designed as an in-school project, as E's teacher's admonishment that kids had better work on it over the holidays ( contra. The homework policy) makes clear. On paper, it may appear reasonable and doable (though even that is disputable), but the reality for the students actually carrying out the assignment. February 2, 2015 at 8:31 AM. It is unfortunate there seems to be ...
Parenting is Political: March 2015
http://northtomom.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Sunday, March 1, 2015. I've heard talk of the "pearl-clutchers" who object to the sex-ed portion of the new Ontario Health and Physical Education curriculum. But I've never met any. My suspicion is that, apart from a handful of people belonging to fringe religious groups (such as the small group that gathered to protest at Queen's Park on last Tuesday), no one really objects to this update. Why? As I tweeted on the day the curriculum was released:. 8212; StepfordTO (@stepfordTO) February 23, 2015. By a B...
Parenting is Political: There’s Too Much F***ing Homework, Part 1
http://northtomom.blogspot.com/2015/01/theres-too-much-fucking-homework-part-1.html
Sunday, January 18, 2015. There’s Too Much F* *ing Homework, Part 1. The meeting began courteously enough, with me enumerating the ways in which we thought the girls’ workload in the two weeks following Christmas break was not only unreasonable and developmentally-inappropriate, but also contrary to both the letter and the spirit of the Toronto District School Board’s homework policy. This policy, about which I've written and tweeted at length (see this. There’s too much fucking homework! The schools do ...

Tuesday, June 11, 2013. The New K-8 Ontario Sex Ed Curriculum: Too Far or Not Far Enough? Last month the Toronto District School Board suspended a middle school teacher for displaying a sexually explicit safe-sex poster in his Grade 7 and 8 classroom. The board has since overturned the suspension, but the media interest in this case. The problem with this older sex ed program is that it is . . . well, old. It was conceived before widespread Internet access, thus before Facebook, Twitter, ...In the Grade ...

Teaching: Let's Roll Up Our Sleeves: Are Teachers Becoming Obsolete?

Teaching: Let's Roll Up Our Sleeves. The senseless ramblings from a veteran teacher that wants to create dialogue that leads to real, significant change. Monday, January 17, 2011. Are Teachers Becoming Obsolete? I've commented about this phenomenon before, but new information has rekindled my interest. Technology could kill the teaching profession. Specifically, online learning could kill teaching. The only piece of the puzzle remaining is standardized testing. The moment data arises that shows stude...
