Wednesday, July 1, 2015. One of my favorite parts of the illustration process is the color study. I used to forego painted color studies, instead relying solely on a digitally rendered study. However, I've found tiny painted studies to be helpful tools before I begin working on a final painting. I usually lay out a basic thumbnail of the larger painting and block in the major colors. Thursday, October 9, 2014. Last weekend, I attended an illustration retreat at the Dumas Bay Centre in Federal Way, Washington. Organized by the SCBWI chapters from Western Washington and Oregon, the retreat was a weekend filled with delightfully challenging workshops led by Kelly Murphy. Here are a few paintings from one Kelly Murphy's workshops, which involved experimenting with color palettes. Here are a few drawings from Sergio Ruzzier's workshops, which involved lots of inking and thinking.

Thursday, July 31, 2014. Here's a new illustration I call Wild West Parade. Below are close-ups and photos of the process. This is my line drawing, I transferred it onto watercolor paper to paint the final. I setup a small model for lighting reference. Building the characters on push pins allowed me to easily reposition them on the foam board base. I tried a few different color studies, I chose the layout that had white space in order to display the characters clearly. Thanks for visiting, happy trails!

The way that Ellen writes her books is beautiful and fairly unique in that the story is composed of poems and interesting forms of writing.
