Chicks With Picks: April 2014
http://kkchickswithpicks.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Wednesday, April 30, 2014. A Graphic Canon Collection, Volume I. Volume one starts with Gilgamesh. And ends with Dangerous Liaisons. This is the antiquities portion of this series. Some, like Gilgamesh. Are written in cartoon-style graphics. Others, like The Odyssey. Are truly illustrated. Each story is presented differently. For instance, The Odyssey. Is the piece of the epic poem about Polyphemus. The Sappho entry is a poem within one illustration. Medea. The New Testament, Beowulf. Obviously I wasn't ...

Chicks With Picks: May 2014
http://kkchickswithpicks.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
Saturday, May 31, 2014. Percy Carey lived a life that felt like the average life of a gang-banger, and then also seemed utterly spectacular. In Sentences: The Life of MF Grimm. He tells his story, including his rise from the streets and his fall from grace. By Rick Riordan, two beloved series connect once again in magic-wielding, monster fighting goodness. Monsters don't run away from demigods! When she decides to follow it, she is surprised by something even stranger- a girl who can see the monster too!

Chicks With Picks: December 2013
http://kkchickswithpicks.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Sunday, December 29, 2013. The Akron AWOL is infamous. The other whollies worship him and the Unwind Culture despises everything he stands for. But behind the moniker is Connor. Connor is just a boy who made it to 17 and can't be unwound, but the weight of the world rests on his shoulders in Unwholly. Book by Neal Shusterman. This was such an interesting follow up to Unwind. On a whole, this is one of the creepiest premises I have ever read. I mean, seriously, unwinding kids? Sunday, December 22, 2013.

Chicks With Picks: Trial of Science and Magic
http://kkchickswithpicks.blogspot.com/2015/01/trial-of-science-and-magic.html
Saturday, January 3, 2015. Trial of Science and Magic. In our universe, science is the law and magic is nonsense. What if it were the other way around? What if witches were revered while scientists were hunted and destroyed? Josephine Angelini takes the world and changes everything you thought was true and right in Trial by Fire. Angelini's skill in this book didn't end with character building. Her world-building was so in tune, it left me feeling like I knew. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Girl of ...

Chicks With Picks: December 2014
http://kkchickswithpicks.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Tuesday, December 30, 2014. Sheer Shadows and Mischievous Mystery. A typical graphic novel is told in pictures and in words, but what if the story was actually two stories: one through words and one through images? Brian Selznick did it with surprising grace, and now Kiersten White and Jim DiBartolo have done it with In The Shadows. And the result is pretty awesome. Monday, December 29, 2014. Elite and Ticked Off. In Marie Lu's The Young Elites. While I really loved Lu's first series, Legend. Adolescence...

Afterthoughts...: November 2010

Times, They Are a'Changin'. Well, everyone, the time has come for me to close down Afterthoughts. As my job changes, my reading habits change, and I find I can no longer sustain a children's book review blog, an adult book review blog, and the blog I ran mostly for myself where I collected font-, vocabulary-, and typography-related items. Introducing, Wildly Read. My new blog based on the concept that I'm wildly, if not exactly widely, read. This is officially the last post I'll make on this blog. The Ki...

Chicks With Picks: Rise from the Ruin
http://kkchickswithpicks.blogspot.com/2014/12/rise-from-ruin.html
Saturday, December 27, 2014. Rise from the Ruin. Leigh Bardugo hit the fantasy genre with a mallet with her first book in the Grisha. Series, Shadow and Bone. The series never lost its momentum, and with this final book, Ruin and Rising. It ends with power and force and a conclusion that befits such a phenomenal series. The conclusion will answer that question in a way you never saw coming. I loved this series so much, and I just can't wait to see what Bardugo does next. Can. Not. Wait! Rise from the Ruin.
