early grades | The Kids' Quadrant
http://www.kidsquadrant.com/tag/early-grades
The Kids' Quadrant. September 23, 2014. Today I want to put in a good word for improper fractions. You know, those fractions where the numerator is larger than the denominator, like 5/3 or 289/18. If there are only 4 pieces in the pie to begin with, how is it possible to have 5? Even adults can have a hard time with improper fractions. So moving back to parent mode, when we give our child chances to see improper fractions, like 5/4, in real life, and when we do this early in their fraction learning traje...
Math versus Literacy? | The Kids' Quadrant
http://www.kidsquadrant.com/2015/06/04/math-versus-literacy
The Kids' Quadrant. June 4, 2015. June 4, 2015. One possible concern about focusing on mathematics at an early age is that too much focus on mathematics could take time away from learning crucial language and literacy skills. There’s an incredible body of research on the importance of early literacy, and no parent, caregiver, or educator would want to detract from a child’s literacy and language development. These studies aren’t alone. The evidence is not perfect and doesn’t yet address. Notify me of new...

The Kids' Quadrant. Reading Share: 5 Ways To Help Your Kid Not Stink At Math (NY Times). August 4, 2014. August 6, 2014. Recently the New York Times magazine published an article on the recent history of math education in the U.S. Written by Elizabeth Green. It’s a fantastic read for anyone who is at all invested in the education of children (which, of course, includes all parents! I highly recommend it, and I’m looking forward to reading her new book, Building a Better Teacher. Thing you can do to help ...

The Kids' Quadrant. Book Review: Zero by Kathryn Otoshi. June 27, 2014. July 7, 2014. It seems to me that children’s math books fall somewhere along a continuum. On one side of the continuum the books practically shout, I am a MATH book! I will teach you something! On the other side, the math is so subtle that you might not even notice it’s there. One of my students recently lent me her copy of Zero. In this book, there are two big mathematical ideas:. 1 Zero is a different kind of number. And see what t...

The Kids' Quadrant. July 28, 2014. For a child to learn what a dog is, they need two kinds of experiences:. 1 Experience observing things that are like dogs, but are not, and giving them names – some things with four legs and fur are dogs, but some are squirrels, some are deer, some are horses…. They’re all equilateral triangles (all sides and angles are the same) – what we might call the prototypical triangle. Or the kind of shape we think about or draw automatically in response to the term “trian...

Three J's Learning: a physical feeling for densities
http://3jlearneng.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-physical-feeling-for-densities.html
Monday, July 27, 2015. A physical feeling for densities. Thanks to Mom, our stair number line recently got a (partial) refresh with some snazzy new number posters. This stimulated a new exploration by J1 to study how dense different groups of numbers are. Well, that wasn't how he phrased it . . . J1's dialogue as he played on the stairs:. Hmm, what if I walk up the multiples of 2? Walks up skipping stairs, no problem here. Oh, that's pretty easy, but J3 might find it tricky. 1, 4, what's next ? 16, oh no!
Three J's Learning: Equal? Ambiguous test questions
http://3jlearneng.blogspot.com/2015/08/equal-ambiguous-test-questions.html
Sunday, August 9, 2015. We have been looking at questions from a local exam contest. I thought two were worth discussing. Kaew had been in the mountains climbing for the last four days and recorded her distances on this graph (the first one below). The other graph shows the climbing distances from Ploy. Below the graphs are 4 statements by other people and we're asked how many of the statements are true. The statements are:. Weera claims: "Each day, Kaew climbed more than Ploy.". The math class answer.

Tuesday, March 31, 2015. Apologies to the avocado and sums of cubes. Who: J3 and J2. Where: side of the house. Cathy O'Neil (THE Mathbabe. Flagged a proof-by-picture of Nichomachus's theorem yesterday and suggested it would be a fun discussion with kids. J2 and I started exploring it today. My current favourite introduction is to say: "a friend thought you might be interested to explore ." In this case, to explore patterns from adding up perfect cubes. We built our table to this level:. J0: ok, so:.

This is where parents should start:. Talking Math with Kids. Why and how to talk math with kids, especially informative story examples. Make sure to check out Which One Doesn't Belong. Peter Liljedahl calls these numeracy tasks. Download one and talk about it with your kids. Even though he has grouped by age, don't be restricted to those suggestions. In particular, older kids (and adults) can still get a lot out of discussing even the "K-3" scenarios. Let's Play Math (Math Teachers at Play). A really gre...
Three J's Learning: math games class: 24 game and connect 4 dice
http://3jlearneng.blogspot.com/2015/08/math-games-class-24-game-and-connect-4.html
Friday, August 14, 2015. Math games class: 24 game and connect 4 dice. As a warm-up, the first grade played tic-tac-toe. This was to prepare them for the main game of they day: dice connect 4. Two players alternate occupying spaces on this grid:. Second and third grade. In both older grades, we played the 24 game. I saw this mentioned recently on Benjamin Leis's blog about his own math club (maybe just in passing here. I thought he had a more extensive post about the game elsewhere, too). If no one else ...
Three J's Learning: math games class
http://3jlearneng.blogspot.com/2015/08/math-games-class.html
Wednesday, August 5, 2015. As a very quick warm-up, I asked the kids about days of the week: for example, what day follows Monday? What day precedes Friday? This was more challenging than I expected and I think need to practice. First Game: number line squeeze. This is a quick game to help encourage their familiarity with the number line and some logical inferences. For example: if they already know that 5 is too small, what do they know about 3? We also took turns where they picked the secret number.
Three J's Learning: April 2015
http://3jlearneng.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Monday, April 13, 2015. What: an exponential fractal bug. As part of our summer vacation, we are doing activities from the Moebius Noodles Multiplication Explorers. Course. I may write later about the activities themselves, but first wanted to share an observation about getting involvement. The question is: how do we get the kids to participate in an educational activity we want them to do? Leave it lying around. So, should we leave lots of things lying around the house? Labels: 2 year old. One point is ...
