Writing – tom griffen

My favorite spot to write is my living room. I belly up to a beautiful, homemade farm table on loan from a good friend. This spot is especially wonderful now since I’ve finally scored a proper chair from a neighbor’s junk pile, allowing me to break apart my trusty, yet wobbly piano bench and add it to my pile of firewood. From where I sit … Continue reading Comings and Goings. August 4, 2015. February 13, 2016. Running My First Marathon. Not Cool Enough, Apparently. Some Kind of Language Lesson.

My favorite spot to write is my living room. I belly up to a beautiful, homemade farm table on loan from a good friend. This spot is especially wonderful. Since I’ve finally scored a proper chair from a neighbor’s junk pile, allowing me to break apart my trusty, yet wobbly piano bench and add it to my pile of firewood. Today something happened that made me angry. Like, angrier than I’ve been in a while. But rather than rant about it, I’m going to type out the conversation between. Excuse me, I say. Sure,...
Morocco – tom griffen
https://tomgriffen.com/morocco-2014
Ever since 1991 when I was in the military stationed in Germany, I’ve wanted to take the ferry across the Mediterranean Sea to North Africa. In November 2014, I did just that during a five-week trip to Morocco via Portugal and Spain. In this blog I paired some of my most memorable moments with a sketch. It was a fantastic journey – thanks for giving it a look! Blog #1: Problems Simplifying. Blog #2: Day One in Lisbon. Blog #3: Ferry to Africa. Blog #4: Tangier’s Literary Scene. Blog #8: Berber Hospitality.
Life – tom griffen

September 2, 2016. September 2, 2016. Today I’m not going to Google anything that might alter how I remember things. Let memories be memories and leave it at that. I am sick of fact-checking my life. From trying to remember things correctly. All these photos zip-locked and stashed in steamer trunk. Pre-digital. Some with a date on the back or time-stamped on the front-bottom corner. Some with a year or place … Continue reading Memory, Gone. September 1, 2016. Running My First Marathon. August 28, 2016.
Run Off – tom griffen
https://tomgriffen.com/2015/07/19/run-off
Whatever. I just want to get it over with. Because I see every car as a threat to my life. He stops and stares at me a moment, then slides open that little rear window some trucks have. I watch to see if he unclips his seatbelt. He doesn’t. Looks like the sun’s gettin’ to ya. Sarcasm. Anger. I’m good. How do you mean? All you guys come out here and hog the road like you own the place! Actually, I saw you coming up behind me and moved over. Wasn’t about to play chicken with a vehicle. July 19, 2015. You a...
Travel Writing – tom griffen

Yesterday, as part of the New Yorker Festival, I attended a travel writing panel held at the Director’s Guild of America (DGA) theater on West 57th Street. The panel included Paul Theroux, Gary Shteyngart, Dinaw Mengestu and Elif Batuman. It was moderated by Paul Gourevitch, staff writer for. And former editor of. The vulnerability of the writer, their anxiety and nervousness, induces a heightened state of awareness that serves the essay well. Things that are different are often the source of comedy....

A record of the shenanigans of an average math nerd who frequently speaks Spanglish and has a secret desire to travel the world, looking for all those beautiful reasons to be happy in life. Friday, March 23, 2018. This is Me Venting About Pain. So my primary care doctor referred me to a neurologist about 18 months ago (fall 2016). First time at a neurologist, which is probably surprising to you considering I've had migraines since I was 9. Don't know. Probably not. I am literally taking Tylenol every sin...

Wednesday, December 9, 2009. 1 I chose to read the article Mixed Signals in the June 2001 New Era. 2 One video resource I watched was McGruff the Crime Dog. He showed the cat Faux Paw going into a chat room and agreeing to meet with someone he didn't know. The cat was met by a huge dog that was supposed to be a small cat. The cat was saved, but was lucky to be saved. McGruff then gave advice about the Internet. 4 i He said that you need to have porn filters with passwords that your children do not know.
Workin' Hard or Hardly Workin'
Workin' Hard or Hardly Workin'. Sunday, August 2, 2015. A Season of Change. Things that I am sad to leave behind:. I am leaving behind a great ward full of wonderful friends. I am moving a little bit farther from my family than I have ever lived before. I am leaving a great apartment with even greater roommates. They have seriously been the best! Things that I am excited about! I have some wonderful friends who are moving to the same area as me! I get to spend about 2 less hours a day in a car by myself.
