Kima can cook ... and eat

Kima can cook . and eat. Tuesday, January 22, 2013. Recipe: Pork taosi, pinoy style. Pork taosi is usually made with a sauce using cornstarch to make it thick. I dislike cooking with the cornstarch/water mixture and try to avoid it (so far, been successful for over a decade). As I wondered how to make my pork taosi's sauce, I remembered a Filipino recipe that added tomato sauce to the meat and black beans. Boneless pork chop, cut into thick strips. Garlic, sliced or minced/or garlic powder. Growing up in...

Kima can cook ... and eat: Recipe: Beef and vegetable soup, pinoy style ... aka Nilaga

http://www.kimacooks.blogspot.com/2012/11/beef-and-vegetable-soup-pinoy-style-aka.html

Kima can cook . and eat. Thursday, November 8, 2012. Recipe: Beef and vegetable soup, pinoy style . aka Nilaga. Growing up in a family full of wonderful cooks, I have favorite dishes that I never learned to make. While I regret not learning how to make siopao, fresh noodles or other Chinese dishes that my dad used to make, I am determined to start adding to the few things that I do know how to make. 1 lb beef, cut into 1 1/2 inch cubes. Water (I filled my pot about halfway). 1 tsp patis (fish sauce).

Kima can cook . and eat. Tuesday, November 8, 2011. 1 yellow onion, sliced. 1 packet of sinigang soup mix, either Mama Sita or Knorr brand (I used 2 because I liked the extra tartness). 1 package of medium shrimp, raw, with shell (we had the easy peel kind). 10 cups of water (more or less depending on how tart you want and how much sinigang mix you use). Sitaw or long green beans, cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces. Sunday, November 6, 2011. Recipe: Salted egg and tomato salad. 20 cherry tomatoes, halved. You ca...

Kima can cook ... and eat: Recipe: Garlic fried rice

http://www.kimacooks.blogspot.com/2012/06/recipe-garlic-fried-rice.html

Kima can cook . and eat. Thursday, June 7, 2012. Recipe: Garlic fried rice. Got lots of leftover rice? This is a no-brainer recipe. If you have the minced garlic in a jar, then it gets even easier. All measurements are approximate, as I just threw in what looked right. I had cooked five cups of rice, but we barely used a quarter of what was cooked. So I had almost a full (medium) rice pot of cooked rice. Cooked rice, broken up. 2 heaping tablespoons of minced garlic (from jar or fresh). 1/8 cup soy sauce.

Kima can cook . and eat. Wednesday, June 1, 2011. Recipe: Penne in meat/veggie sauce. Note: I usually like using conchigliette pasta, or the small seashell-shaped pasta, because the shape helps "scoop" more sauce into each bite. 1 box Barilla penne pasta. 2 jars of spaghetti sauce. Onion, finely chopped. Carrots, finely chopped. Bell pepper (I used only one green pepper for this, but I usually like to use all three colors of bell peppers in my pasta sauce). 1 small can of mushrooms, drained. For this rec...

Kima can cook . and eat. Sunday, May 8, 2011. Recipe: Palabok (Vermicelli noodles with seafood). Mama Sita palabok mix packet (I actually used 2 packets because I like my palabok with extra, extra sauce. One package of bihon, or vermicelli, noodles (mung bean thread). 189; onion, chopped. Garlic cloves, chopped (as many as you want). Shrimp, tail-less, head-less, peeled and deveined. A handful of julienned carrots (I had a pre-cut package). Minced fried garlic (also found in a jar at the Asian store).

Saturday, October 22, 2011. COML BLOG, Part 4 — Farewell post. When the house was up, I wanted to help lay the tiles in the bathroom. I did! I helped mix the paint and paint the walls. I also helped with the grounds, digging holes so the betelnut palm tree “saplings” could be planted in a row in front of the house. Links to this post. Saturday, October 15, 2011. Nocturnal Islander: March 2012

Saturday, March 31, 2012. 8220;SEVERE WEATHER ALERT”. 8220;TORNADO WARNING”. I don’t know about anyone else, but seeing these words cut across the TV screen or on my computer’s screen are enough to get me into action. I check the weather maps, and I mentally prepare what I need to grab — important documents, wallet, extra clothes, canned goods, bottled water. We knew that the high-risk areas were more than 50 miles away, and we also knew that tornado shelters were only a minute away from us. Because ...

Wednesday, January 8, 2014. An email with the subject "Rediscovering your greens" got me thinking about my experience with vegetables and fruits. My mom would send us kids out to cut long fronds of malunggay. Star fruit) and fruits that I know only as soursop, iba. My college years in Spokane, WA, opened my eyes to the goo...

Monday, June 3, 2013. If you want to eat it, you've got to learn to make it. Living on my own has forced me to be braver in the kitchen. I like to cook, but I'm not great at it. I always mess up a dish, usually by over-salting it or (cringe! So what would anyone desperate to taste something from past experience do? Well, try to make it! After craving it for months, I finally scoured several Web sites and compared recipes, finally trying to make it on my own. It turned out crunchy (maybe a bit burnt) ...

Monday, May 28, 2012. Where'd you get Yours (Lemon Powder)? Some things are hard to come by . but that doesn't always justify raising the cost of products to four, five times a "regular" retail price. My last can. :(. This past weekend, I used up what was left of the Yours Lemon Powder to make chicken kelaguen. Today, a Memorial Day holiday, I decided to look up sites to see if there were more outlets selling that particular lemon powder. I zeroed in on the price: $27.99 per can. Links to this post.

Sunday, July 3, 2011. In search of Indian food. Last night I had planned to drive over there, but when I got home from work, my sister had already cooked pasta with two types of sauces. I mixed both the tomato sauce and the shrimp “sauce” and then added dried hot pepper flakes. That was enough to drive away thoughts of Indian food for the night. However, today I was on my own. My sister’s family was going to be in Lawrence for the whole day, and so I could eat as I please. Finally I arrived at Zona Rosa ...

Friday, February 7, 2014. Comment on public education. The responses: "Friends." "School." "Beach.". I stared at the computer screen in disbelief. Could high school students be that clueless? Why yes, they could be, and are, often ignorant of what many would hold to be common knowledge. Ve = could've NOT could of. Ve = should've NOT should of. Ve = would've NOT would of. Saturday, November 2, 2013. Asparagus biscuits. Yes, I just used two words that seemingly don't go together. But they exist! This is a snack that many Guamanians love to eat. I showed a childhood friend over Skype the bag that I received from a houseguest, and she was envious. She even pointed out that I was eating it in front of her! Well, I did open the bag to show what each "biscuit" looked like to her German husband. It was open already, so I thought that I may as well indulge. :). Links to this post.

Thursday, December 20, 2012. Warning: This is a rant). All the talk about Doomsday and the Mayan Apocalypse, as well as the news about the blizzard that dumped snow in the Midwest, have gotten people online talking about being prepared. Before the storm made landfall and electricity was cut, I already prepared a meal with enough leftovers. Luckily, I finished cooking about 10 minutes before my power went out. I also had hot water in a thermos that would keep the water warm until the next day. I'm an isla...

Paano ang mga magulang mo? Nasabihan mo ba sila ngayon ng “I love you”? Na pinapa ulit-ulit mo sa mga kaibigan o kasintahan mo? Minsan akala na all is well. Pero hindi natin alam, ang dami na palang araw ang nasasayang, at nababalewala. Iba parin talaga ang noon. Pero pwede pang mabago ang ngayon. 😜😆. New Year’s Eve.
