Livingstone and the Mosi-oa-Tunya | Kimberly's Zambia

https://kimberlyszambia.wordpress.com/2010/05/04/livingstone-and-the-mosi-oa-tunya

Observations and musings of a Canadian expatriate living and working in rural Zambia. May 4, 2010. Livingstone and the Mosi-oa-Tunya. The beautiful Zambezi Sun Hotel in Livingstone, Zambia. A statue of Dr. David Livingstone at Victoria Falls. The Zimbabwean side of Victoria Falls. An impala posse at Victoria Falls National Park. Me on the African Queen. Sunset on the Zambezi River. Mosi-oa-Tunya, ‘the smoke that thunders’. I can safely report that no one has ever attempted this. I decided to take my Vict...

To Weave or Not To Weave, To Relax or Not to Relax—That Is the Question | Kimberly's Zambia

https://kimberlyszambia.wordpress.com/2010/09/28/to-weave-or-not-to-weave-to-relaxer-or-not-to-relaxer—that-is-the-question

Observations and musings of a Canadian expatriate living and working in rural Zambia. September 28, 2010. To Weave or Not To Weave, To Relax or Not to Relax That Is the Question. The self-loathing triple play: blond hair, black skin; crazy weave, and bad perm. Me– nearly twenty years after my first mistake… er… relaxer. Kimberly Bennett hates weaves with a passion. Especially bad ones. I know that this will anger a lot of my Facebook friends, but if you lived where I live, you’d hate them too! My relaxed...

Traveling Light: Lessons from Afghanistan

http://disruptedroutines.blogspot.com/2012/04/lessons-from-afghanistan.html

Monday, April 16, 2012. I learned many things from my month in Afghanistan and after a month of being home in Canada, I still find myself processing much of what I experienced. Here are a few things I definitely learned or was reminded of:. Things are not as they appear. The human spirit is strong. The determination and pride the Afghan people exhibited was truly inspiring. They are amazingly strong, not to mention incredibly resourceful. Even in desperate times and places, people can be at their warmest.

Traveling Light: May 2011

http://disruptedroutines.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 22, 2011. Video: Sapa and Area. Some highlights from my trip to Sapa. Saturday, May 21, 2011. A weekend get-away to Sapa was good for the mind, body and spirit. I'd heard and read so much about Sapa and it was high on my list of must-sees for Vietnam. The descriptions of this small town set in the mountains of norther Vietnam seem to always include phrases like "mystical mountain tops," "valley views that will make you swoon," "stunning, towering peaks," etc. It's the summer season in Sapa, w...

Traveling Light: Where in the world is Bobbles?

http://disruptedroutines.blogspot.com/2011/12/where-in-world-is-bobbles.html

Sunday, December 4, 2011. Where in the world is Bobbles? I've been neglectful. Again. Many of you have emailed me over the past few months asking what Bobbles has been up to, and I've neglected to fill you in. It's been an exceptionally busy few months since the return from Vietnam. Yes, Bobbles is back from 'Nam though it appears he's trying to mislead you with the hat and map. Sneaky. So, here's a quick run-down with a lot of photos and very little text. (I know that's the way you like it.). I think th...

Traveling Light: Clear Winners.

http://disruptedroutines.blogspot.com/2011/12/clear-winners.html

Saturday, December 17, 2011. Even though there was no contest or my usual food hunt, I must share some great food finds in NYC. I've spent the past few weeks feeling a bit aimless since I haven't been able to establish a food target that I could focus on and review. It's probably a good thing. But ironically, I just don't seem to learn. Meet the DKA. The outside:. And the lovely innards:. This little bad boy is from Dominque Ansel Bakery. DKA: Dominque's Kouign Amann: tender, flaky, croissant-like dough ...

Traveling Light: April 2011

http://disruptedroutines.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 28, 2011. Obliteration. Genocide. Devastation. Annihilation. These are the words that float through my mind as I walk through the Aggression War Crimes gallery at the War Remnants Museum in Hanoi. The feelings that course through my heart are equally strong. Horror. Shock. Anger. Rage. Hopelessness. Sadness. Numbness. I won’t describe the photos I saw and the text I read because I don’t know where to begin. I don’t know what else to say. Please don't throw rocks at me. Thanks. 8221; insta...

Traveling Light: Hunting in New York

http://disruptedroutines.blogspot.com/2011/12/i-have-one-month-in-new-york.html

Sunday, December 4, 2011. Hunting in New York. I have one month in New York. As with every other trip to one of my favourite cities, I feel the need to go on a hunt. Previous trips have focused on hunting for the best pizza slice in NYC. In East Village on 14th Street was the clear winner and has proven its first-place status in subsequent trips. I noticed they've had a few more locations pop up, but I've yet to try them. I hope they're equally good. And you haven't even ordered yet. And then your order ...
