Brokentone: Expansion and Compression

The photoblog of Kenton Jacobsen. Wednesday, January 16, 2008. Perspective is always a difficult issue for me with photography; it's tough to gauge or notice things like expansion and compression just walking outside and taking photos. The idea is that as you get wider, the objects in the frame spread out, but as you go telephoto, the objects in the frame get closer together. Tonight, I perfectly lined up my subject twice at different focal lengths which really exhibits this technique.

So, I had fun with it in the editing. I'll leave it to you to ponder the meanings and importance of personality, faces, and such. I took these photos of her in May of 2006, and it was the first portrait shoot that I had done. They turned out fairly well, but being portrait photos, I decided that I ought to do some touchup work (not that she needed it). I additionally decided to de-saturate everything except her. Yeah, so about four hours of background repainting and stuff on this one.

LIKE us on Facebook. SIGN UP FOR CLASSES. My classes are for tweens and teens (4th grade on up). Girls Rock is a combination of discussion, relaxation and other experiential activities that teach girls about themselves so they can better navigate girl world (i.e. friendships, frenemies, conflict, self-image, social media, etc). What’s special about this program? I design the class based on the needs of the girls signed up. Girls gain awareness of their behaviors. Builds trust and community. We laugh a lot.
