Pottery from the Butternut Valley. Burnished blackware pots are inspired by and reminiscent of ancient American Indian and Chinese Neolithic Age pottery. These pots are painted with a special slip and burnished to attain a shine, then pit-fired in a carbonization process. Decorative pieces, not well suited to everyday utilitarian use.

Pottery from the Butternut Valley. My stoneware focus is in wheel-thrown functional pottery. These pots have been high fired in a reduction kiln to cone 10 (2381 F- 1305 C). They are oven, dishwasher, and microwave safe. There are a variety of glazes available, which result in different colors and different finishes (matt, satin, and glossy).

Pottery from the Butternut Valley. I have a special affinity with (American-style) Raku. Pottery. The excitement and unpredictability of the fast-firing and post-firing combustion process creates pots with a unique spirit and energy. Pots are low-fired to cone 04 (1940 F - 1060 C), clay will still be porous and if filled with water will not leak but sweat. These pots are meant as decorative pieces, not well suited to everyday utilitarian use.

Pottery from the Butternut Valley. My passion for working in clay began in 1977 when I happened upon a school for pottery while driving. Around the back roads of one of the most beautiful valleys of upstate New York. I have been lucky to be a member of the ceramics community that is Elizabeth Nields Clay Workshop. Everything is made by hand. For many years I worked as a potter. Part-time and was employed (to help pay the bills) first as a recreational therapist.
