For a recent project I worked on, an illustrative style of effects was desired, similar to the those found in Zelda: Wind Waker. Previously working as an effect artist with Nintendo gave me some insight into the design and technicalities required. In order to pull off this style of effects in Unity, I had to extend what was available in the default Shuriken system by writing a series of custom emitters and affectors using C#, as well as some additional CG shaders and materials.
