All players can attempt to get onto the high fairway without fear of running into trouble if they don’t quite make it the bank is part of the fairway on the left which is wide. KING ISLAND MARITIME TRAIL. View as a pdf. Australia's worst civil disaster was that of the barque Cataraqui, wrecked on the West Coast of King Island on 4 August 1845 with the loss of 400 lives. Daylight found some 200 survivors still clinging to the wreck. At about 10 am the last remaining boat was launched, but immediately capsized, drowning its five or six occupants. Captain Griffiths altered course to pass around the southern end of King Island. Then just as night fell, the ship struck rocks off Stokes Point. No lives were lost. But the 3000 ton cargo had disappeared forever, and even today, the site of the wreck has not been conclusively determined. Currie, King Island.
