舊名「蕃薯寮」，傳說係因有一老嫗於路旁結茅寮，售賣蕃薯糊，成為往來行旅歇憩之處，日久聚為村落，遂以之為名。最早記載 是在清康熙年間。台灣府誌記載:「羅漢內門(今內門鄉)、外門田、北大傑嶺社」。1888年改稱太平街。 日治1896年設置撫墾署，屬鳳山管轄。1897年改稱辦務署，仍署鳳山縣。1901年廢縣置廳，成為蕃薯寮廳，1903年改稱阿猴廳蕃薯寮支廳。1920年行政當局鑿於舊名不雅，乃擇境內最高之山『旗尾山』命名，改稱旗山街，屬高雄州。 1945年，行政區曾作若干調整，旗山仍屬高雄縣，1946年改為旗山鎮，屬 高雄縣. 訂閱： 張貼留言 (Atom).
