The Scaredy Cat Naturalist: July 2014
http://www.thescaredycatnaturalist.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Saturday, July 19, 2014. My beautiful bumblebee nest box from Bumble Boosters. Did not attract any queen bumblebees. It might have been a bit late when I set it out. It still looks pristine so I think I will set it out again next year. Desirable residence, brand new, lovely prospect with access to a variety of flowers, perfect for family life. The top two holes are plugged with mud. Looking closely at them, I saw what I first thought was mud on their fur but I think now they were all infested with mites&...

The Scaredy Cat Naturalist: Baby Spider Nursery - This Year's Batch of Araneus diadematus
http://www.thescaredycatnaturalist.com/2015/06/baby-spider-nursery-this-years-batch-of.html
Thursday, June 18, 2015. Baby Spider Nursery - This Year's Batch of Araneus diadematus. I ran string around the porch posts and made signs. Over the course of three to four days they ventured farther from the nest, at first returning each night to cuddle together in a ball. It takes three to four days for the babies to disperse completely. These will grow up to string their beautiful webs around the garden, catching raindrops in the late summer. Posted by KJ Bateman. http://www.thescaredycatnaturalist.com/2015/06/return-of-crawling-dead-not-all.html
Thursday, June 4, 2015. Return of the Crawling Dead-Not All Caterpillars Are Cute. Hello friends. What horrors do I have in store for you today? Something really creepy, though I realize now that I should have taken video rather than still picture so you could experience the true awfulness of what I am about to reveal. Actually, they look pretty cute in the photo. This is because you can't see them TWITCH! Do you have them where your are? I sincerely hope not. Malacosoma californicum. Posted by KJ Bateman.

The Scaredy Cat Naturalist: June 2014
http://www.thescaredycatnaturalist.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Sunday, June 29, 2014. When I visited my grandparents and aunt in Florida forty years ago, the nights were livened by tiny frogs hopping into the house from the backyard. We don't see them now. One of the great things about going to new areas is seeing unfamiliar wildlife. I was so excited when we found this fellow hiding behind the hurricane shutters at our aunt's house. Then he turned toward me. Look at that face, almost human. Yes, even when I travel I run into invasives. Catch the frog in a plastic b...

The Scaredy Cat Naturalist: November 2013
http://www.thescaredycatnaturalist.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Thursday, November 21, 2013. While in Florida last week, I took a walk through the Hugh Taylor Birch State Park. It is an example of what southeast Florida looked like before the drastic re-shaping of the 20th Century. I thought it was surprisingly empty of wildlife. A heron and some baby raccoons were all I came across until I was heading out of the park. Golden Banana spiders Nephila clavipes. Are non-aggresive, as are most spiders. They are great bug catchers as you can see in the web. You'd think art...

The Scaredy Cat Naturalist: A Christmas Cactus
http://www.thescaredycatnaturalist.com/2014/12/a-christmas-cactus.html
Tuesday, December 9, 2014. My Christmas cactus is actually blooming. I haven't managed to kill it yet. Long ago, in California, I used to have quite a green thumb. Here in Washington, I can kill anything. It is remarkable that this plant is still alive, let alone producing a bloom. It used to be much bigger. Posted by KJ Bateman.
