Saxmundham Museum is in the heart of rural Suffolk, recording and preserving the history of Saxmundham, Kelsale-cum-Carlton and Benhall. The IP17 area is one of the largest postal areas in the UK and has been a very important part of east coastal Suffolk. There are a few explanations for the meaning of the town name, some believe that it refers to the home of a warrior lord called Seismund or Seizmond. You’ll find Saxmundham Museum at 49 High Street, Saxmundham. We’re at the north end of the High Street, towards North Entrance, just before the railway bridge. There’s no parking at the Museum, although easily accessible free and paid-for parking is just a short walk away, behind Saxmundham Market Place. If you come on the train to Saxmundham, (highly recommended! The Museum’s a short walk down Station Approach, turn left through the Market Place and head on to North Entrance. M and W M. We often get asked questions about Saxmundham and so here are some thoughts on possible answers and few other items. Where was the V.A.D. Hospital housed in WWI? The Gannon (Institute) Rooms were used as a Voluntary Aid Detachment (V.A.D.) hospital. Saxmundham and District Local History Society. Richard Crisp is the Chairman of the History Society and can be reached on 01728 663583. Annual subscription is 10.00 and visitors 3.00 individual visits. New members are very welcome. We meet every second Thursday of the month except January, in the URC Hall, Chapel Road, Saxmundham, starting at 7.30 pm. Refreshments are served at all meetings. The Museum held a quiz night on Saturday 4th February in the Market Hall. 16 teams of quizzers enjoyed a lively evening.
