MindWalk – TMTurner. November 23, 2013. Why is it so damn hard to quit smoking? This ongoing struggle led me to research a little bit about nicotine addiction in hopes that I would better understand it and eventually be able to kick the habit once and for all. Both stimulates and relaxes the body. The drug stimulates the adrenal gland causing a release of epinephrine. Nicotine also activates receptors in your brain. When these receptors are activated they release dopamine. MAO) MAO is the enzyme responsi...

Brain chemistry in nonsuicidal self-harmers… What’s going on in their heads? | zhanttycastro

Brain chemistry in nonsuicidal self-harmers… What’s going on in their heads? Since we were going over neurotransmitters and their effects in class I was wondering just how much brain chemistry could have an effect on this behavior and if it is somehow caused by a chemical imbalance. It would stand to reason that these people who self-harm have some type of imbalance that blocks physical pain somehow and maybe numbs the person, like a drug would, by blocking pain receptors. According to the study, HVA or ...

Gas! Gas! Gas! (Intro to Biopsychology Blog #1) | mjfreeby

Intro to Biopsychology Blog #1). They were everywhere and they needed to die. Nobody likes them. Most hate them. I did not want them to even breed. If they reproduced there would be more and it would be even harder to make them disappear. So I grabbed the can of insecticide containing organophosphates and sprayed the cockroaches. In very short order they began to twitch. Soon they would be dead. What are organophosphates and how do they work? There is also a scene where Stanley Goodspeed portrayed by Nic...

MindWalk – TMTurner. Monthly Archives: October 2013. October 26, 2013. Teens just don’t understand, literally! DON’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO! I AM OLD ENOUGH TO MAKE MY OWN DECISIONS! How many parents have heard this once (or fifty times) from their teenager? Does then the feeling of guilt set in that you may be too clingy or that you are the only parent who is not letting your teen do something? A study was done by Deborah Yurgelun-Todd et al using functional MRI. To compare brain activity of teens and adult...

MindWalk – TMTurner. September 7, 2013. What is a cochlear implant? Before I get into that, let’s go over the normal hearing process. Sounds enter the ear canal which causes the ear drum to move or vibrate, these sound vibrations move into the cochlea and cause the fluid in the cochlea to move, the fluid movement causes the hair cells to bend which create neural signals which are picked up by the auditory nerve, and the brain then interprets these signals as sounds. I blame Jack Frost! | lasalge

A fine WordPress.com site. I blame Jack Frost! I hear those sleigh bells ringing. Taken in early fall, I can not wait for winter! Apparently some Grinches out there do not share the same love of the winter as I do. While the faint hope of snow and below freezing temperatures keep me going, to others this could be a rather depressing season, some could even say they get sad. Frosty the snowman was jolly happy soul. I’m Dreaming of a white Christmas. But what really causes SAD? There could be a few factors...
