The Knivetons of Mercaston | Kniveton or Knifton Family History

http://kniveton.org.uk/node/4

Skip to main content. Kniveton or Knifton Family History. Origin of the Name. The Knivetons of Mercaston. They originated from William a junior son in 1300. His son Nicholas became prosperous in the mid 1300s, partly as a result of Royal Patronage from John of Gaunt. They further increased their wealth by buying property during depressions, good marriages and other royal patronages up until the mid 1500s enabled them to increase their estates. Thomas the last of this main line died in 1706 leaving only c...

A Fortune Lost | Kniveton or Knifton Family History

http://kniveton.org.uk/node/6

Skip to main content. Kniveton or Knifton Family History. Origin of the Name. The value of the Kniveton land holdings in 1600 was probably worth about 6.75m today! In total it covered about 2000 acres! Their demise occured during a lengthy agricultural depression in the mid 1600's. Their tenants could not pay rents so landowners like themselves became swamped in debt. Sir Andrew at the time of the Civil War of 1642/46 was more concerned with fighting the royalist cause than managing his estates.

Links to Today | Kniveton or Knifton Family History

http://kniveton.org.uk/node/5

Skip to main content. Kniveton or Knifton Family History. Origin of the Name. From 1700 to Today. After the Civil War of 1642-1646 Oliver Cromwell ordered the destruction of all parish records which were in Latin and therefore suspiciously 'popish'. A will of a Thomas Knyveton dated 1686 survives and helps make a link between the Knivetons of Mercaston and many of today's generation of the family. The full text of this will is included in my book The Knivetons: of knaves, knights and a fortune lost .
