Railroad Images I Have Found. It is all a snapshot of something that is destined to change. On the way to look for something else I came upon a shoebox filled with railroad photographs that had been sent to me by railfan pen-pals in the early Seventies. Tucked in among them were pictures of my own that I took just after the formation of Conrail in 1976. Collectively they represent PRR/PC/CR from the late Sixties to the late seventies. In April 1997 I drove south toward Kentucky and stopped at Fostoria, Ohio for a few minutes. I caught this Q509 (Toledo Walbridge-Chicago Barr) eastbound on the CSX Columbus Subdivision as he passed a Stone Train who had pulled timetable west of the diamond and was now shoving a cut of ballast into the B&O yard on the Willard Subdivision. Detroit Shared Asset Area. When CSX and Norfolk Southern carved up Conrail, the two giant railroads needed to preserve competition in certain regions where Conrail's physical plant could not be easily divided. These regions were Northern New Jersey (and New York City), Southern New Jersey (and Philadelphia), and Detroit. Their solution to this problem was the creation of three Shared Asset Areas (SAA), where Conrail still exists. But in the form of a terminal railroad which is owned by both CSX and NS.

Railfanning Alliance, Ohio. Alliance is located in Stark County about halfway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh, and about halfway between Massillon and the OH/PA state line, in northeast Ohio. Its location on the Mahoning River lent it to settlement, and the arrival of the railroads made it a moderately sized industrial town. I got a bit frustrated by the abstraction most programmed images bring along. Of course a certain randomness can be vivid, but I believe something figurative should remain.
