白内障とは、目の中の水晶体（レンズ）が濁る病気です。昔から俗に「しろそこひ」と呼ばれています。シワや白髪と同様に加齢とともに現れる老化現象のひとつで、年齢とともに水晶体のたんぱく質が変性して次第に白く濁ってくるのです。進行すると視力低下により日常生活に支障をきたすようになります。普段、私たちが目で見ている「像」というのは、角膜、水晶体を通った光が網膜で結ばれたものなので、水晶体が濁っていると霞んで見えるようになります。白内障は40歳代から進行しはじめ、50歳代では40～50％、60歳代では70～80％、70歳代で80～90％、80歳以上はほぼ100％の人に白内障の進行がみられます。いったん白内障になると、その視力低下をメガネやコンタクトレンズで矯正することはできませんが、白内障手術により視力を回復できるようになっています。白内障の種類は濁っている状態によって細かく分類されますが、原因として多いのが加齢によるもので、一般に老人性白内障と呼ばれています。
