This standard Kolate has an aluminum content of 12.7% and is the color and consistency of honey. Kolate 7013 is a solution of active aluminum alkoxide in a 100 SUS severely hydrotreated napthenic base stock. This is a cyclic trimer of aluminum isopropoxide (AIP) and in the reaction to form the soap, one mol of isopropyl alcohol is released. Kolate 7013 is only suited for use in industrial aluminum complex grease formulations.

The same active molecule as Kolate 7013, but delivered in a low viscosity technical white oil. The aluminum content is 12.7%, and in appearance it is a clear, nearly colorless, mobile solution. Kolate 7013 LV enjoys the HX-1 designation from international standards organization NSF International. As such, it can be used to prepare both industrial and H1 approved food machinery greases.

Standard Kolate is a six-membered ring consisting of alternating aluminum and oxygen atoms. One molecule isopropyl alcohol is attached to each aluminum atom. In theory, in the first step of the reaction, the fatty acid replaces each alcohol on the ring to form a cyclized aluminum monostearate. This takes place at about 100 C. More efficient soaps are made with acids ratios of benzoic to fatty acids of less than one. Assuming the following starting parameters:.
