全境除東側隆起珊瑚礁大、小崗山殘丘外，一片平原。岡山街位於平原中央，在明清開發之初是府城(台南)，通往縣城(高雄左營)南來北往的中途站，也是西側海濱部落，與東側山區部落互通有無的輳點。 草創時期的岡山，是屬於明鄭及日據初，期這時候的岡山，人稱「竿蓁林」或「阿公店」。由於岡山昔日原為荒涼、渺無人煙的原野，茅草竿(蓁仔)叢生莽莽，故名曰官眞林(竿蓁林)。而「阿公店」名稱的由來，相傳清康熙年間一老翁在溪邊築茅屋，並設攤販賣茶水、雜物，並供商旅住宿。後來定居者漸多形村落，遂以「阿公」而茅屋為店，更名為「阿公店」。 日治時在1920年被劃為高雄州岡山郡岡山庄，自此阿公店正式更名為岡山，而岡山名稱的由來是因為附近有大、小崗山之地標。第二次世大戰末期，岡山是日本空軍據點，遭受毀滅性轟炸。1949年後海峽對岸湧進的另一波移民朝，空軍基地擴張，也激化了岡山擴張的腳步。 訂閱： 文章 (Atom).
