Tuesday, September 18, 2012. Into The Burn Zone. August and September, 2012, have been smoke-filled months in Lake County. Hundreds of thousands of wildland acres burned on the East, West and North sides of the lake. The fires burned right through the canopies of mountainside Blue Oak forests and even Valley Oak groves in the creek bottoms. The aftermath reveals a simple skeletal calligraphy of ghost woodlands. Firefighters bulldozed many new firebreaks through the hills. In the shade of The Great Oaks.

Friday, June 28, 2013. Back in Lake County we ate cherries from the tree before the birds did. A cottonwood leaf in the creek bottom. Kelsey Creek cut a swathe out of the West bank this winter, felling a cottonwood. The newly cut bank reveals layers of sediment and bisected gopher tunnels. By the third week of June, this section of Kelsey Creek was bone dry and. Hopping with miniscule toadlets (Western toads) and froglets (Pacific tree frogs). The remains of a culvert sagged in the creek bottom.

Saturday, December 7, 2013. The Town On The Lake. The Carnegie Library in the County Seat of Lakeport was built in 1918 by the shore of the ancient lake. It no longer functions as a library, now housing offices. Away from town, at many points along the lakeshore, the views are as of old. The tule beds of the Northeast shore. Saturday, October 5, 2013. In the Land of Family Farms. In Big Valley, a land of agriculture, tractors share the roads. Two dozen American white pelicans wheeled high in the sky over the ranch. At this time of year their numbers start building on Clear Lake as harsh weather begins to close in on their nesting lakes in the interior West. I walked through a meadow on the ranch.
