Others who got away. There was this niggling feeling all along that we have to get off our backside and do something. Something a little substantial, something that would enrich. To paraphrase the Tata Safari ad, we wanted to reclaim our life. It sounds a little bombastic to say we wanted to commune with naturebut that is exactly what we wanted! Others who got away. As with most other estates in the area, Kookal was originally settled by an English couple in the late 1920s, as part of a much larger estate. During the 50's, a local gentleman purchased the estate and continued the good work until he left for his place in the heavenly abode about a decade later. We are probably the only owners for miles around, nutty enough to go down this route. Along the way, we have planted about 8000 coffee saplings too, brought electricity and dug a lake.

A coffee plantation based on natural farming principles, it is blessed with lovely climate, greenery all around and natural mountain spring water. Situated at 3300 feet in the lush Western Ghats (one of the world's eight hottest biodiversity hotspots), it is about half an hour’s drive from Sa. Kleshpur, off the highway to Mangalore.
