Reviews, Rants and Reflections: So this is what it feels like to be German.
http://reflectionsrants.blogspot.com/2014/07/so-this-is-what-it-feels-like-to-be.html
Reviews, Rants and Reflections. Tuesday, July 22, 2014. So this is what it feels like to be German. Orange is the new black. Palestinians are the new Jews. Israelis are the new Nazis. OK, this is not a nuanced statement. It is meant to shock. For the other side there is this video,. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict explained. Which also has its points. Please do take the few minutes to see it for perspective. There are many proxy powers fishing in the troubled waters. I try to do my small bits of protest...

Reviews, Rants and Reflections: Persist or change course? A curmodgeonly take on cute moral stories.

Reviews, Rants and Reflections. Sunday, December 8, 2013. Persist or change course? A curmodgeonly take on cute moral stories. This post has been brewing for a while, but was prompted by a Facebook post by a dear friend. The story goes as follows: donkey is stuck in well. Farmer decides neither well nor donkey is worth the expense of saving. Farmer calls neighbours to help him shovel dirt on top of donkey. Donkey shakes dirt off his back and uses piled up dirt to climb out of well. One went like this:.

Reviews, Rants and Reflections: Review: The light between oceans by M.L. Stedman
http://reflectionsrants.blogspot.com/2014/01/review-light-between-oceans-by-ml.html
Reviews, Rants and Reflections. Saturday, January 11, 2014. Review: The light between oceans by M.L. Stedman. I am a picky reader of fiction these days. The world is too much with us. This time of transition in society at large is so fascinating that I spend much reading time searching the muddy stream of the internet for gold nuggets of insight. My patience with 'first world problems' has become limited. Already seems like historical fiction. The miracle turns out to be the beaching of a row boat contai...

Reviews, Rants and Reflections: Some thoughts on collective guilt and personal responsibility
http://reflectionsrants.blogspot.com/2015/01/some-thoughts-on-collective-guilt-and.html
Reviews, Rants and Reflections. Thursday, January 15, 2015. Some thoughts on collective guilt and personal responsibility. My talented virtual friend Jacqui Binford Bell. She of the amazing art and photographs, posted this thought provoking remark on Facebook. Don't we at some time just have to let go? How can you enjoy the dawn when you are constantly made to feel guilty, ashamed, or afraid? I started to reply and realised I needed a blog. I did not personally infect any Sinixt (the local first nation) ...

Reviews, Rants and Reflections: Generations and fortune
http://reflectionsrants.blogspot.com/2012/03/generations-and-fortune.html
Reviews, Rants and Reflections. Monday, March 19, 2012. I cannot stand people of my generation who do not recognize how LUCKY we have been. For most of us life is a combination of conditions we were handed and what we made of them. To my friends who believe that we totally create our own reality: manifesting a good life is easier if your starting point is not birth as a poor girl in Somalia. I do not begrudge others a greater good fortune, but I want to see them acknowledge it even as I acknowledge mine.

Reviews, Rants and Reflections. Thursday, November 24, 2011. The Attawapiskat scandal. It's not that simple. The original blog post was written in November 2011. Events continue to unfold. I will add to it as we go. January 7 2013: IdleNoMore is turning into an international movement to agitate for aboriginal rights AND better treatment of Earth. Cheering loudly! Chief Theresa is now on hunger strike to protest the unilateral changes to the Indian Act bulldozed through by the Harper regime. Describes the...

Reviews, Rants and Reflections: Valentine
http://reflectionsrants.blogspot.com/2011/02/valentine.html
Reviews, Rants and Reflections. Monday, February 14, 2011. I am intensely grateful that Valentine's Day was NOT celebrated during my long-ago and far-away childhood. The last thing a weird and unpopular child needs is to have its lack of status rubbed in by a lack of cards, or by pity gifts. My sister tells me that "Hartjes Dag" is observed in the Netherlands these days. I can only assume that Hallmark and the flower-and chocolate merchants have successfully introduced it some time after 1969. The subtle...

Reviews, Rants and Reflections: Why I Do Not Support the Terry Fox Run
http://reflectionsrants.blogspot.com/2007/10/why-i-do-not-support-terry-fox-run.html
Reviews, Rants and Reflections. Monday, October 29, 2007. Why I Do Not Support the Terry Fox Run. I have wanted to do this rant for years, but am too cowardly, or call it diplomatic, to do a Letter to the Editor. Why alienate good people in a tiny town? I have to live here. It was originally written in September 2007 during the forced layover in Dease Lake. It is that time of year again: The annual Terry Fox run. Some background for non-Canadians:. Fox began by dipping his leg in the. Now don't get me wr...

Reviews, Rants and Reflections: Review: Pope Joan by Donna Woolfolk Cross
http://reflectionsrants.blogspot.com/2014/10/review-pope-joan-by-donna-woolfolk-cross.html
Reviews, Rants and Reflections. Thursday, October 30, 2014. Review: Pope Joan by Donna Woolfolk Cross. Pope Joan is a thoroughly researched historical novel about the story (history or legend? Of a woman who lived as a man and became pope for 2 years in the mid ninth century A.D. Her true gender is revealed when she gives birth during a procession. Extensive notes about sources in the back support the argument for this being a true story. However. As a novel it suffers from Too-Good-To-Be-True-Heroine...
