A Konglish World

Monday, March 9, 2009. Aaaaand we start over again. Just when I thought that I knew how to teach in Gurye, I got a new group of kids who reminded me otherwise. The first week of classes left me with a dumbfounded look of confusion. "But.but. that lesson worked so well with them last year." It turns out that the only people more shy than Korean students are new Korean students. Once again, I find myself rethinking the semester strategy. Friday, February 27, 2009. A Konglish World: Camp Fulbright

http://www.koreaeta.blogspot.com/2008/07/camp-fulbright.html

Tuesday, July 29, 2008. During orientation ETA's spend two weeks being involved in Camp Fulbright. It is an English immersion camp for Korean kids (anywhere from 8 to 17 years old) that has two purposes: to teach English to Korean children and teach ETA's how to teach. For those of us who have never taught before, the value of the camp is immeasurable. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A little about me. This blog will eventually contain a series of short stories. It's a work in progress mind you.

A Konglish World: August 2008

http://www.koreaeta.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 24, 2008. First Day of School. Today was my first day of school and things went fairly well. Normally, I am supposed to teach three classes on Monday, but because of some scheduling confusion, I taught a total of fifteen minutes today. Most of my day was spent getting to know the other teachers. Some were certainly more interested in the Korean-looking foreigner than others. It was definitely a learning experience for me in many ways except teaching. Thursday, August 21, 2008. As the ETA o...

A Konglish World: Arrival

http://www.koreaeta.blogspot.com/2008/07/arrival.html

Sunday, July 13, 2008. Anyway, those are some initial observations of Korea. Hope all is well in the States and if anyone has any questions or wants me to look into something, let me know. Good night. Glad to see your blog is up and going! Though I didn't notice it until just today.) Hope you get the hang of things over there before too long. Though there's really no downside, that I can see, to having two boxes of detergent. July 22, 2008 at 11:47 AM. July 22, 2008 at 11:50 AM. A little about me.

A Konglish World: Last Week in Chuncheon

http://www.koreaeta.blogspot.com/2008/08/last-week-in-chuncheon.html

Tuesday, August 12, 2008. Last Week in Chuncheon. As the ETA orientation comes to a close, it has been beginning to hit all of us that we're actually going to have to teach. It has been reiterated to us that we are to teach conversational English, but it's times like this that I am starting to wish that I took my grammar courses a little more seriously. Fortunately for me, the teacher (who I will just call "Manny") was a tremendously kind person with a nice family. August 14, 2008 at 12:38 PM.

A Konglish World: A New Home

http://www.koreaeta.blogspot.com/2008/08/new-home.html

Wednesday, August 20, 2008. There is a massive language barrier as I don't speak Korean and they don't speak English. Communication has been low and the meals awkward. Occasionally, the father asks me a question to which I can only respond "nay? Overall, my school is a good place with good people and my homestay family is warm and inviting (though grandma won't let me help with dishes because I am so. handsome). August 21, 2008 at 7:49 PM. Don’t be such a guppy. Say it →. June 24, 2009 · 3:56 pm. Things i’ll miss about this small-village atmosphere:. Walking to and home from school everyday. Meeting lots of local elderly people on my walks and exchanging bows, answering their questions (they all know me somehow, and always want to know where i’m going and what i’m doing.), and receiving gifts, food, etc. for my homestay family (yes, this all happens on typical walks.). The neighborhood cow whose eyes follow you the whole way down the street.

Don’t be such a guppy. The newest English-speaking member of the family →. June 24, 2009 · 4:24 pm. Our stories only exist inside our heads. Inside our ravaged bodies. Inside a time and space of war. There is no paper trail. Nothing official on the books. What we were promised:. That I would save my father if I went with them. That I would find a job. That it was better there. That I would serve the country. A warehouse full of tears. Thousands of worried girls. My braid cut against my will. Say it to me.
