Laura (Kim) Elizabeth (Hyo Jin) Wachs. Thoughts from a Korean American Adotee/Poet. The adoptee guesthouse I’m staying in is nice but the atmosphere from the other guests is different than what I expected. I didn’t realize that 1. most adoptees stays are very temporary and 2. there isn’t a strong community aspect here. Thus far everyone I’ve met prefers to keep to themselves. 8221; “The boat was less than six blocks away” or my favorite limerick ever. There once was a girl from Rebar. June 24, 2014.

Laura (Kim) Elizabeth (Hyo Jin) Wachs. Thoughts from a Korean American Adotee/Poet. We’re close enough to leaving that when I think about it, I get butterflies. You? I’ve been reading/ watching a lot of adoptees documentations on their journey. It makes me think people have been there, done that so I don’t need to. What makes this story valuable enough to be told when there are plenty of others already in existence? I have a lot to learn about the mechanics of the adoption industry and on that note, I be...

Laura (Kim) Elizabeth (Hyo Jin) Wachs. Thoughts from a Korean American Adotee/Poet. Wow – it’s been two months and yet the context of what I’ve experienced thus far feels like it has exceeded what I have done in the past two years. So many times in the past I’ve heard from friends/family phrases such as:. 8220;You’re not Korean, you’re American”. 8220;I don’t even think of you as Asian”. 8220;You look Asian but you’re really just white”. Above anything, I admire the resilience of Korea. Yes I miss my fri...

Rok 'n Roll Radio. A Korean Aussie adoptee goes back home for the first time. Hilarity ensues? First Trip Home 2013. Wham, Bam, Now You’re a Ma’am: Going to a Korean wedding. I didn’t think I’d be invited to my sister’s wedding. With all the tension between my family and her fiance’s, I didn’t think they’d want to tell them that my mother had to put me up for adoption. 8220;Your boyfriend… has yellow hair? 8221; giggled my aunt. 8220;Yes, he does! Rok 'n Roll Radio. A Korean Aussie adoptee goes back home for the first time. Hilarity ensues? First Trip Home 2013. What does your tattoo mean? I didn’t know what to do with myself in Seoul, so I joined a gang and got a tattoo. Just kidding. I didn’t join a gang. But I did get a tattoo. I’d like to give a special shoutout to my Mum in Australia, who reads this blog, and may be having a nervous breakdown right now. But in the last few months, I noticed more and more young Koreans with visible tattoos ...

Rok 'n Roll Radio. A Korean Aussie adoptee goes back home for the first time. Hilarity ensues? First Trip Home 2013. Things I didn’t do until I came to Korea. I love garlic. Recipes that call for only one measly clove of garlic are to be ignored and ridiculed. But eating raw garlic isn’t something we do in Australia. The first person I ever saw eating raw garlic was my Umma. I thought that was pretty hardcore. Cook a meal only using chopsticks and scissors. Make exciting ramyeon / ramen / instant noodles.

Teaching an 80 minute-long class of 30 kids aged between 7-13 without a Korean co-teacher to interpret my instructions had not gone well at all. So what else to do after a long day of failure apart from eating your greasy, salty feelings? Yeah Just call the chicken place. Which is easy if you can speak fluent Korean. Good I would like the garlic chicken…. I hung ...

122 – So Tired. On May 25, 2011. Jacob has been a bit fussy lately. He’s learned how to scream and squeal so he uses it to get our attention all the time. I feel that DH gets a bit frustrated with this behavior since he really doesn’t know what to do or how to react. I get frustrated with DH’s behavior and in turn, it upsets Jacob. However, it’s all a work in progress. Eventually, Jacob will be old enough to use his words to communicate his feelings and things will get better. I wonder if we’ll eve...
