Elizabeth in Korea

Tuesday, January 27, 2009. The first time I met with Sang-Ik he wrote in my notebook that living on Jeju-Do made him feel 답답하다 – Romanized (I think) as ‘dapdap hada.’ I didn’t know the word. Sang-Ik was born in Seogwipo, the town we both live in. We dated for a couple of months but we’ve stopped seeing each other now. We could only speak Korean with each other since he doesn’t know English, and that was obviously just one of many complications. Is to apply again next year if I don’t get in. But at the sa...

Elizabeth in Korea: Flying Solo

http://www.koreanword.blogspot.com/2008/10/flying-solo.html

Monday, October 27, 2008. The first night I was on Jeju Do, my co-teacher asked me, "What is the most difficult thing for you to adjust to in Korea? I had just spent the day meeting her and my principal for the first time - starting at Yonsei University in Seoul with an awkward lunch and ending the day after our flight to the island with an only slightly less awkward dinner. I couldn't think of anything. Then my principal yelled, "Yoggiyo! I am alone. Or if I will continue to be alone. Even my students w...

Elizabeth in Korea: A Dragonfly on a Leash

http://www.koreanword.blogspot.com/2008/09/dragonfly-on-leash.html

Saturday, September 6, 2008. A Dragonfly on a Leash. Friday night I was sitting in my living room, legs crossed on the couch, engrossed in my book. Chu-Ho, my host brother, came in from the porch holding a giant stick and wearing a big grin. "Chu-Ho! I said. He kept smiling as he walked toward me with the stick. I'm thinking, Why the hell is this kid bringing a stick into the house? Wow- that's an amazing little boy. September 25, 2008 at 3:35 PM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A Dragonfly on a Leash.

http://www.koreanword.blogspot.com/2008/10/its-late-and-im-musing.html

Thursday, October 9, 2008. It's late and I'm musing. Sometimes this drives me crazy – always being a visitor. I want to prove that I live here, but to who, and how, and why? And tomorrow – I am so excited about tomorrow! I will try to write soon…I promise! This is where I should plug my usual apology for never writing on my blog…oh there, I just did. I hope everyone who reads this is doing really well. I’m sending my love to you from across the w. October 15, 2008 at 10:18 PM. Its late and Im musing.

Don’t be such a guppy. Say it →. June 24, 2009 · 3:56 pm. Things i’ll miss about this small-village atmosphere:. Walking to and home from school everyday. Meeting lots of local elderly people on my walks and exchanging bows, answering their questions (they all know me somehow, and always want to know where i’m going and what i’m doing.), and receiving gifts, food, etc. for my homestay family (yes, this all happens on typical walks.). The neighborhood cow whose eyes follow you the whole way down the street.
