Without education people can never hope to escape living conditions like this. Subsistence farming is a hard way of life that is becoming less secure due to more erratic rainfall patterns. Most farmers would love their children to become educated and escape the poverty trap that they themselves are in. Statistically in Kenya, every wage earner has 7 dependents. This is because of the amazing loyalty every person feels towards their own family and their extended families.

This new mother and her baby had queued up for hours to receive medical advice and treatment from a qualified person. KRF had financed a rural clinic held in a local church but open to the whole community. People waited from 8 am to be seen mid-afternoon or not at all, so great was the demand; appropriate medicines were given, free of charge. People with serious conditions were then referred to hospital for specialist help. KRF has an account with a reputable hospital nearby.

Christian Discipleship is training for life from a Christian perspective. It prepares young Kenyans spiritually, emotionally and practically for the challenges they may face in life. This residential training takes place on a farm in a rural area of Kenya. We believe that this opportunity should be free to whoever wants it and so the farm is there to enable the young people to provide for themselves. They openly discuss AIDs and early marriage and other social problems as part of their Christian witness.

In KRF we have targeted a specific community living in a semi-arid area of Kenya for community development. We believe in helping people to help themselves. We have been providing micro-finance for small business start up costs. Now our main current initiative has been to work with local community leaders and get together the worst-off Mothers in the area and help them provide for themselves and their children. They have been making beautiful necklaces using recycled material.

At KRF we strongly believe in self-help. We would much rather micro-finance a small business start-up than to just give someone food. However, we also always. Give food to anyone. Sometimes, when the dry season is especially bad and widespread hunger is beginning, we give out larger amounts of food [pictured left]; this is only on a temporary basis, as we don’t want to create a culture of dependence . Pictured right is a typical rural home with the land around having been tended by the entire family.
