La tradition populaire attribue la création du Tai chi ch'uan à Chang San Fen, un moine taöiste qui aurait vécu au XIIeme siècle. Son enseignement est resté très secret jusqu'au milieu du XXème siècle. Etude d'un art proche du langage. L'apprentissage des arts martiaux au sein de l'association est assez similaire à celui d'un langage. Il débute par l'étude des positions de bases : on apprend tout simplement à rester immobile dans ces positions, afin de fortifier les jambes, qui sont les " fondations " du corps. Les pratiquants de styles externes seuls (comme le kung fu Shao Lin) sont souvent trop rigides et trop durs dans leurs mouvements. Ils manquent de souplesse, d'élasticité à la fois physique et mentale. Les pratiquants de styles internes seuls (comme le Tai Chi Chu'an) sont par contre souvent trop mous dans leurs mouvements et leur pratique martiale manque de réalisme.
