There are really two philosophies that I can see when it comes to writing code that is supposed to endure through abusive user interaction, fail-safe and fail-fast. Fail-safe on the one hand tries to keep playing at (almost) all costs by avoiding exceptions and HTTP 500s. Fail-fast on the other hand tries to avoid any data corruption by stopping the minute that it cant guarantee execution completed successfully. Imagine we have a function that takes an id and gets something out of the database for us.

Im beginning to believe that best practices are a tool for people who cant be bothered to do a basic cost/benefit analysis for themselves. Im not saying Im smarter than the people who coin popular adages, I would just rather understand the why than the how on issues where Im supposed to follow a convention. When were so fired up to exterminate code duplication from our code base, we need to realize that like everything else, duplicate code may have some benefits to go along with the long list of costs.
