天授庵 Tenju-an | Kyoto Gardens

Laquo; 西芳寺 Saihō-ji. Was founded in the late 14th century by Kokan Shiren in honor of Priest Fumon, the founder of Nanzen-ji. Much like the other buildings here this temple was leveled in the Onin Wars and was not rebuilt until 1602 by Hosokawa Yusai. The Hondo, Shoin and Main Gate of Tenjuan that were rebuilt in 1602 are all still standing today. Stone Path and Entry to Garden inside Tenju-an: a combination of rectilinear cut stones and natural uncut stones is typical of many Japanese garden paths.

This is an amazing garden for its serenity, complexity and compactness. Murin-An literally means “Neighborless Abode”. In reality, despite the the nearby moderate bustle of Nanzenji and the short distance from the Tozai line subway, it was quietly and mercifully devoid of visitors when we visited in December of 2008.
