Commissioner's Comments: October 2016

Monday, October 31, 2016. All students deserve opportunities to find their passion. In a week that kicks off with many of us participating in trick or treat, I got a real treat on Saturday night. I got to attend the Kentucky Music Educators Association’s (KMEA) State Marching Band Championships. It was an incredible event and I was honored to be a part of it. The reality is we teach children and those children need the opportunity to experience music, art, career and technical education, science, social ...

Commissioner's Comments: January 2017

Monday, January 9, 2017. Thank a board of education member. January holds various meanings for different people. It is the beginning of a new year, a new legislative year, a time to refresh ourselves and I would argue our perceptions, and a time of hope. There is another aspect of January that many overlook, it is Local Board of Education Appreciation Month. I call on all Kentuckians to thank their local board members. Even if there is a board member you do not agree with them, thank them for their t...

Monday, December 12, 2016. Feeling blessed to work for our children’s futures. So, with all of this going on, why do I feel I am so blessed? Simply put, I love my job! I am blessed because I get to work with and for the students of the Commonwealth. They are why we do what we do. So, in this wonderful holiday season that is so focused on our children, I ask that each of you recommit yourselves to making the lives of our students better. I wish all of you Merry Christmas and the happiest of holidays!

Commissioner's Comments: February 2016

Friday, February 26, 2016. Making good on the Commonwealth Commitment. Five years ago, my predecessor, Terry Holliday, asked superintendents and local board of education chairs to sign a pledge. It was called the Commonwealth Commitment to College and Career Readiness. While the 2015 deadline for the Commonwealth Commitment has come and gone, and many of the school, district and state leaders involved in it have moved on, the Kentucky Department of Education and school districts statewide must not become...

Monday, May 16, 2016. The meaning behind the symbol. Last week, we unveiled the new logo for the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) via a news release. I am sure that some of you found this to be expected with new leadership, and while somewhat accurate, I would like to explain the logo a bit more in this blog. Equity, Achievement, Integrity. As I have said before, equity, achievement and integrity are the guiding principles of our work together for the betterment of our students. Monday, May 9, 2016.

Monday, March 28, 2016. The most effective test prep is good teaching. Well, it’s that time of year again. The weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer, the grass is greening, the trees and flowers are blooming and the Commonwealth is emerging from a cold, gray winter and bursting to life once again. Yes, spring has sprung in Kentucky. It is time we realized that waiting until the end of the year and cramming their heads with information they didn’t relate to or get the first time aro...
