Amber's Alerts From Life in Haiti: December 2012

Monday, December 17, 2012. Update With Not Much to Update. I haven’t blogged in a long time and here’s why. Nothing much is going on. Seriously. My friend and colleague Ben K said it very well here. Life and routines are very similar here. I teach, I grade papers, I work out, I hang with friends, I read books, I cook, normal life that I won’t bore you with. Posted by Amber Epley. The Moto Taxi: Preferred Mode of Transportation. I love it for many reasons:. Traffic- Port-au-Prince is insanely overcrowded ...

Amber's Alerts From Life in Haiti: October 2012
http://alertsfromamber.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, October 9, 2012. This year we haven’t done a whole lot of that. I’m not sure why exactly. Lack of motor vehicles is a big factor, but maybe we are just tired. A couple weekends ago though, we got out. The city was just too much for too long. Too much smog. Too much trash. Too much burning. Trash Too much dirt and dust and heat. Too much noise. Too much! And it was cold! Tasty dinner even without a campfire. View from the cabin early in the morning. Yes there is destruction and unimaginable pover...

Amber's Alerts From Life in Haiti: March 2012
http://alertsfromamber.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, March 27, 2012. Schlepping to Seguin with Several Seniors. Did you like my attempt at alliteration.nice huh? Striking a pose on the hike back home. Weekend before last 6 teachers (myself included) and all 23 members of the QCS Senior class participated in the annual senior hike up to Seguin. This was the same hike that a few of us participated in over Spring Break.with a few differences. Katie and I along the trail! Difference two: luggage. Spring Break hike = we had to take everything. Differen...

Amber's Alerts From Life in Haiti: May 2012
http://alertsfromamber.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
Thursday, May 24, 2012. I have the whine-virus this week and it’s starting to get to me. Being back in the states last weekend messed up my groove. I experience fast internet, reliable electricity, and the all-around awesomeness of predictable first-world life. But this week has kinda sucked. If you are a blog “skimmer” and haven’t been reading all the details above, let me sum it up for you: I’ve been a big, smelly, whiner all week long.). This isn't a "pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps" self-speech, ...

Amber's Alerts From Life in Haiti: Back to the Crazy That We Call Normal
http://alertsfromamber.blogspot.com/2013/01/back-to-crazy-that-we-call-normal.html
Wednesday, January 9, 2013. Back to the Crazy That We Call Normal. Thankfully, I have always had a ride and Jill was there right on time to pick me up. We drove over the potholes, down the crazy roads, past the women selling their wares on the street, beside the pig eating from the pile of trash in the middle of the road, along the roads, every one of which is lined with walls of all shapes and sizes.walls everywhere. Amber's Alerts From Life in Haiti: April 2012
http://alertsfromamber.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
Monday, April 30, 2012. Our first attempt had been a failure. Not a complete failure, we were still able to have fun ( see post here). The "Haiti Bingo" game that Jill made for us. We saw everything on the list except for "Airplane.". Our goal for Friday was to get out of the city and make it to Cange, a small village on the outskirts of the Central Plateau and home to Paul Farmer’s organization Zanmi Lasante. We were actually staying at the Zanmi Lasante. View from the balcony. After a good night’...

Amber's Alerts From Life in Haiti: Parent's Visit to Haiti
http://alertsfromamber.blogspot.com/2012/11/parents-visit-to-haiti.html
Sunday, November 11, 2012. Parent's Visit to Haiti. Whew, it’s been a long time since I’ve blogged. A lot has been going on: trip to the Dominican, school events, and my parents visiting me! In the middle of October, my parents flew to Haiti and arrived on Thursday afternoon. I picked them up at the airport and drove us back to the school. What followed was a weekend of running around sight-seeing and trying to let them experience all that my life involves around here. Little ones lining up! John and his...

Amber's Alerts From Life in Haiti: September 2012
http://alertsfromamber.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html
Thursday, September 27, 2012. Thoughts on a Thursday night (because I haven't been very diligent about blogging.). I sometimes wonder if, when I eventually move back to the states, I will be that weird person who lived overseas for a while. I wonder if I have developed certain odd habits that will stick with me for years to come. Will I always try to be in bed before 9pm, because that's when the air conditioner turns off and I want to fall asleep before it gets too hot? Just some thoughts from today....

Amber's Alerts From Life in Haiti: The Moto Taxi: Preferred Mode of Transportation
http://alertsfromamber.blogspot.com/2012/12/the-moto-taxi-preferred-mode-of.html
Monday, December 17, 2012. The Moto Taxi: Preferred Mode of Transportation. I love it for many reasons:. They take you right where you want to go. Instead of taptaps that go on certain streets and routes only, the moto takes you straight ot your destination. No walking. Motos zoom around, between, beside (and almost any other preposition you can name) cars without having to just sit and wait your day away. The awesome-tough-badA factor. Most blan. Aren’t even allowed to walk down the street in the ...
