News From Your Trade Union Branch. Tuesday, August 24, 2004. WORKERS WIN AGAIN IN VENEZUELA. Despite a massive campaign of lies and intimidation from the right-wing opposition and privately owned media, President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela has won the most recent referendum on his presidency. Chavez won 59% of the votes in what ex-US President Jimmy Carter said was the biggest electoral turnout he had ever seen. They have made it clear that they'll stop at nothing to protect their wealth and privileges.

Reports from the Early Implementer sites indicate that a far greater number of staff than the 80,000 claimed by the government will suffer a pay freeze if A4C is introduced later this year. The final report from the Early Implementor sites has been published and it now seems clear that our worst fears about A4C have been confirmed. In fact, the report itself is pretty short on new information, but the actual experience in the Early Implementor sites speaks for itself:. As many as 40% of staff on protection (ie a pay freeze). New staff coming into downgraded posts to start on the new, lower rate of pay.

After dealing with the practical business of the meeting, members will watch the documentary film, "Inside The Coup", which tells the inside story of the bosses' failed coup of 2002 against President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela. A resolution will be presented for discussion.
