Historic North West River. Donald A. Smith, later Lord Strathcona, operated the North West River trading post between 1848 and 1860. He expanded the number of trading posts and proved the viability of raising vegetables and livestock in North West River. This prompted settlers to do the same and many began harvesting crops of potatoes, turnips and other hardy vegetables. The Heritage Craft Shop. The Heritage Craft Shop has a beautiful selection of Labrador arts and crafts. These traditional items include carvings, slippers, mittens, socks, moccasins, sweaters, and Innu Tea-Dolls. There is also a great selection of souvenirs distinctive to this region. Most items available in the shop have been created by local artisans from the communities of Rigolet, Sheshatshiu, North West River, Goose Bay, and. Mud Lake in Labrador. SUMMER HOURS: 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, seven days a week.

Merle's Tea Room operates during peak season or at special request and offers, soup, sandwiches, cookies, tea, coffee and juice. You can use the internet corner to catch up on your email. You'll find local handicrafts to help you remember your visit at the craft shop next door. The North West River Beach Festival was established in 1986 and since then, it has evolved not only into Labrador's largest outdoor music festival but a great Labrador tradition.
