Alex's essays: Chronic conditions
http://alexszatmary.blogspot.com/2011/06/chronic-conditions.html
Tuesday, June 14, 2011. At five in the afternoon last Tuesday, I was walking to the bathroom and I paused and rubbed my eyes with the heels of my hands and I realized that the reason why I had had trouble getting work done was not because I was lazy or just generally distractible but because I have bipolar disorder and an anxiety disorder and so I have bad mood days sometimes. -: when positive thinking goes wrong
http://cobeinthemorning.blogspot.com/2010/02/when-positive-thinking-goes-wrong.html
When positive thinking goes wrong. The "self esteem movement" started in the late 70's. Born out of assumptions and the likely self-esteem of those who propagated it; it's main tenet is that a positive view of oneself is an important thing to have. My objection to this is simple- If you tell me that you feel good about yourself, it begs the question "Why do you feel good about yourself? What the critics say: "self-esteem: an erroneous appeasement." -Ambrose Bierce. More varied answers could be:. Not to t...

King Cobe's Decrees: September 2012
http://kingcobesdecrees.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html
September 28, 2012. Have you ever stopped to think about what you do every day? Not for what immediate purpose you do it - but what you are literally doing. Does it make sense? I assume you are a rational actor in your own life. You must first satiate your immediate physical needs. You've gotta eat. When you eat - what do you eat? A clever and ecologically conscious reader might snap back that they eat "local" and "organic" foods. But those are very relative terms. A reactionary against the industrial re...

Alex's essays: July 2011
http://alexszatmary.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
Wednesday, July 20, 2011. Pennies in the parking lot. I hadn’t eaten lunch and it was five. I had some toaster-oven pizza, and then I took a shower, packed my things, and headed up toward Philadelphia, to visit my girlfriend. On my way, I was still hungry, so I stopped at Burger King to get a veggie burger. I played Nelson Tethers: Puzzle Agent. As I ate. My throat was sore from the stress, so I had some ice cream for dessert. I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles). I went to Grilled Cheese and Co. I’m gonna be. And a...

The Day The Music Died – For Me. December 8, 2009 — jamieumbc. We’ve all heard somber-sounding people on television or the radio asking the question: “Do you remember where you were when you heard about (. Insert traumatic event here. For my parents, there was Pearl Harbor. And then the assassination of John Kennedy. For most people of my generation, we have 9-11. For me, the shooting death of John Lennon. On December 8, 1980 falls into this category. I’ve always been a Beatles. On the night of December ...
