The Floral Design Studio at Swallowtail Farm. Little Pond Farm Field Trip. I let an entire season of flowery goodness come and go since I last wrote here. And it was perhaps our most flowery season to date. Last year we grew more flowers, booked more weddings, and distributed flowers to more locations than we ever have! I was too busy growing and harvesting to make time for writing. But a recent visit to an awesome farm has inspired me to share again. The other blooms that caught my eye were the poppies ...

The Floral Design Studio at Swallowtail Farm. This Week on the Farm: Week 5. Spring is glorious. I feel like everywhere I go in Gainesville these days my nose is filled with the sweet scents of Jasmine and Magnolia flowers. My neighbors have a large arbor covered with Jasmine in full bloom right now. It makes me think of my dad–it’s his favorite flower. And what’s even more awesome is when the flower has passed, it produces an equally awesome pod that is perfect for fresh or dried arrangements! Each day ...

October in the Garden – Grey Tabby Gardens
https://greytabbygardens.com/2016/10/29/october-in-the-garden
Growing Flowers in Central Florida. October in the Garden. October 29, 2016. It’s so lovely to feel a chill in the air in the early mornings, a sign that our heat and humidity are past and we can look forward to cooler and drier days. Here and there are a few signs of autumn. A few of my orchids which live outside most of the summer under the shade of some trees are starting to flower. This one looks a fitting color with the lichens, silver bark and air plant. Plumbago is just that perfect shade of blue!
Looking Forward – Grey Tabby Gardens
https://greytabbygardens.com/2016/01/31/looking-forward
Growing Flowers in Central Florida. January 31, 2016. September 25, 2016. As we were close to a frost twice this week, they suddenly all decided to drop their leaves and the lawn now looks very autumnal! I have really been loving the Hyacinths. Even before they are fully up and open they are so pretty. I heven tucked a few into a few little mercury glasses. Even just one gives of such a powerful fragrance. I have added some silver birch twigs into the pots too because Tulips tend to get a bit floppy....
Splashes of Color – Grey Tabby Gardens
https://greytabbygardens.com/2016/02/20/splashes-of-color
Growing Flowers in Central Florida. February 20, 2016. September 25, 2016. Our rather upside down winter and early spring have contributed to some unexpected color combinations in the garden this week. I’m not sure if I should be embarrassed by them or if I should just enjoy them while they last! Even the cardinals are adding pops of color amongst the flowers. Bees are everywhere enjoying the new flowers…. On the Mystic Spires Salvia…. The container plants…. I enjoyed two big sprays from La Marne rose in...

My Cutting Garden – Grey Tabby Gardens
https://greytabbygardens.com/category/my-cutting-garden
Growing Flowers in Central Florida. Category: My Cutting Garden. February 27, 2017. Once again there never really was winter in Central Florida this year, which is a blessing in many ways because I don’t have to rush out with frost sheets to cover tender plants but it also means that before we know it the hot and steamy season is upon us. We have had lovely spring … More Predominantly Pink. New Year in the Cutting Garden. January 24, 2017. New Year in the Cutting Garden. October in the Garden. There is s...
Some Garden Inspiration from Sissinghurst Castle – Grey Tabby Gardens
https://greytabbygardens.com/2016/08/13/some-garden-inspiration-from-sissinghurst-castle
Growing Flowers in Central Florida. Some Garden Inspiration from Sissinghurst Castle. August 13, 2016. A quick trip over to England has allowed me to escape the heat for a while and the noise of construction which is ever present at home while we complete an addition project. I am not over here very long and I am currently writing this from a very cool (or should I say cold? Clematis and Sweet Peas. I believe this is Dahlia Requiem. Sadly I’ve never had any luck with alliums which is annoying becau...
Wildflowers and a Spring Beach Walk – Grey Tabby Gardens
https://greytabbygardens.com/2016/03/08/wildflowers-and-a-spring-beach-walk
Growing Flowers in Central Florida. Wildflowers and a Spring Beach Walk. March 8, 2016. September 25, 2016. The last couple of weeks in Central Florida have bought blue skies, cool fresh air and warm sunshine. It is a wonderful time of year to be sure! We love to go out to the beach on part of the Cape Canaveral National Seashore to walk and blow the cobwebs away. The last time I took you on a walk out there it was wild and stormy. This weekend it was definitely more typical of Florida! There is certainl...
Seeking Some Shade – Grey Tabby Gardens
https://greytabbygardens.com/2016/06/22/seeking-some-shade
Growing Flowers in Central Florida. June 22, 2016. September 25, 2016. Although damaging I still think there is something very beautiful about roses laden with rain drops! Unknown old tea rose. The towering Salvia Amistad that was in this bed got blown sideways and so it has been cut back and is coming up nicely again. Luckily some Salvia Black and Blue is still here much to the delight of the hummingbirds which love this flower. Some small Gardenias are also mixed in here. Plumbago and Foxtail Fern.
First Cut Flowers – Grey Tabby Gardens
https://greytabbygardens.com/2016/03/19/first-cut-flowers
Growing Flowers in Central Florida. March 19, 2016. September 23, 2016. One thing I have definitely learned is that many flowering plants are not responding to warm temperatures when they flower but from the lengthening daylight. The Ammi Majus I planted last fall to be used as a filler flower for arrangements has finally decided to flower despite growing healthily and to epic proportions all winter! The lone daffodil is the last one of the forced bulbs I tried this winter. Looks like a little nest is be...
Tropical Border – Grey Tabby Gardens
https://greytabbygardens.com/2016/05/23/tropical-border
Growing Flowers in Central Florida. May 23, 2016. September 25, 2016. Although I dot tender plants around the garden, most of them end up in a big border which runs along the edge of my back garden. It is the first thing I see as I step out of the study onto the back patio and look over the lawn. It is also the first thing you see as you come around the back from the little courtyard. I love running my hand over these and wondering what they were – a fern maybe or a sea plant? 8230;and yellow Lantana.

| The Floral Design Studio at Swallowtail Farm
The Floral Design Studio at Swallowtail Farm. When I first started farming, a friend turned me on to the publication Growing For Market. A fantastic resource full of great advice for growers. I was immediately drawn to to the flower articles written by Erin Benzakein of Floret. I pretty much wanted to be her when I grew up. For years, I read her column, gobbling up every bit of knowledge I could, experimenting and expanding the varieties in our own flower fields. But my husband said, “why not? And Stepha...

Thursday, May 15, 2014. Have we mentioned that we really liked Edinburgh? I'm guessing you know we're museum geeks by now. we'd shut down two already, and had a third opened just for us. The problem was that with the first one we'd shut down, the National Museum of Scotland, we'd only gotten through the first three floors that go through prehistory, the earliest humans in Scotland, and "Kingdom of the Scots". We had to FINISH! Wednesday, May 14, 2014. Last bit of the car tour - Speyside. We also got to t...

Ladybugblues beauty | My take on the best beauty products, past and present!
My take on the best beauty products, past and present! Posted in Beauty News. A little something for the men now (or the lovely ladies buying for them J). A man’s scent says a lot about the character behind it, here are a few of my favorites. Hugo boss Bottled ( 57.50 for 100ml). With its notes of oriental, citrus, apple and sandalwood to name a few, this fragrance by Hugo Boss is one for the business man. Fresh yet distinctive, a classic fragrance that will get you noticed.
