A Thinking Stomach: April 2015
http://www.athinkingstomach.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Friday, April 10, 2015. That's an essential part of who I am. Ten years ago, it wasn't, but with each year since then, it has become more and more part of me. I make bread. So, Julia is no longer Julia and needs a rechristening. It needs a name worthy of its ability to change and improve, relinquishing the old and making room for the new. Suggestions? A Thinking Stomach: May 2015
http://www.athinkingstomach.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Monday, May 18, 2015. I think I'm going to haunt Filoli. S orchard. I'm going to move into the leaning trellis webbed with hanging gourd birdhouses, make a mattress of tufted grasses, and fall asleep with whatever critters also feel comfortable there. While the grand house of the estate is wonderful, and the manicured formal gardens, so carefully pruned and color-coordinated, are models of a tightly controlled garden vision, it's the fruit trees where I want to be. A Thinking Stomach: Oxalis
http://www.athinkingstomach.com/2014/02/oxalis.html
Sunday, February 09, 2014. When people complain about oxalis invading lawns, usually they're whining about Oxalis corniculata. Creeping Woodsorrel, a vigorously crawling, low growing plant covered with tiny yellow flowers that eventually turn into explosive seed pods, scattering more creepers every direction. Others complain about the South African weed that covers California hillsides in the late winter— Oxalis pes-caprae. In another part of the bed, Oxalis tetraphylla. Var "Iron Cross" grows, with larg...
A Thinking Stomach: Oxalis Redux
http://www.athinkingstomach.com/2015/02/oxalis-redux.html
Friday, February 06, 2015. One plant I keep coming back to over and over, especially since our move north, is oxalis. I've written about this genus before. And how I love its ease as a garden bulb, the way it provides textural foliage interest and satiny color when it blooms, the way some species of it persevere in dry, alkaline soil. The natural beauty that sustained him in times of pensive solitude. Experienced gardeners say that it is unlikely you will ever get rid of Cape oxalis completely. In fa...
A Thinking Stomach: Soul Food
http://www.athinkingstomach.com/2015/02/soul-food.html
Wednesday, February 11, 2015. There are many problems with the book The Telling Room. By Michael Paterniti, but there are many greatnesses as well. One such is this, a snippet of philosophy the main character Ambrosio shares that the author tucks away in a footnote:. Not his wine. I take a swig of it, of him. No better description of you, dear Christina. I found the footnotes a major distraction, but overall, its a ripping yarn. Guzmán and the cheese wars reminded me of something from Pagnol.
A Thinking Stomach: On Aging, or The Inevitability of Compassion
http://www.athinkingstomach.com/2015/03/on-aging-or-inevitability-of-compassion.html
Friday, March 20, 2015. On Aging, or The Inevitability of Compassion. Last weekend, Indiana and I hiked the short but steep side of Sugarloaf and I started thinking about twenty years ago, when I was in college, while my parents lived in Arizona. One Christmas when I was visiting them, my brother and I decided to hike Superstition Mountain. Phone photo from the top of Sugarloaf last weekend: a hazy day over the bay. I have no pictures of the Superstition hike. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
A Thinking Stomach: Portraits in a Garden: The Kubos

Tuesday, May 27, 2014. Portraits in a Garden: The Kubos. Loretta Allison, Spade and Seeds. And Christina Wenger, A Thinking Stomach,. Have set out to find gardeners who can teach us how to live better in our outdoor spaces. Home gardeners who have designed their own spaces—large or small—in ways that feed their homes and their spirits draw us to them. We figure we’re hungry to learn from them, so you might be also. Join us in our occasional series as we explore their spaces. Text by Christina Wenger.
A Thinking Stomach: Blossom Time
http://www.athinkingstomach.com/2015/03/blossom-time.html
Monday, March 02, 2015. When I was 17, Their Eyes Were Watching God. By Zora Neale Hurston changed my life. I had forever loved books, but none had shifted my perspective so powerfully before this novel; or, to think about it differently, previous to this book, I had not been aware of the work. A book was doing on me. The book lifted me off my feet and through a hurricane. I couldn't stop thinking about it for weeks. It was like a flute song forgotten in another existence and remembered again. What?
A Thinking Stomach: October 2014
http://www.athinkingstomach.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Sunday, October 12, 2014. It's been quiet here on A Thinking Stomach, and there's a reason for it:. This summer, we learned that E may win a great job; in September, he won it; last week, he moved north to start it. I'm not ready to write about what the ranchito has taught me in our years here, or to reflect on two decades at my school, but I did want to give you a glimpse of what's going on so you know the reason for the silence.
